A Guide For Aluminum Extrusion

Extrusion

Extrusion is when materials are pushed through a small hole to convert them into a regular shape with a uniform, cross-sectional area. It is also known as the toothpaste procedure. A white or streaky matter passes from a narrow tube in this process.

Aluminum Extrusions

Aluminum Extrusion

It is almost a similar method to extrusion. It is more complicated than earlier. In this process, a log of aluminum is given an extreme temperature up to 900oF in an extrusion press. The pressure applies to the billet to push it to slide through a narrow hole at the other end of the chamber.

Extrusion is a consistently occurring procedure that can create hundreds or even thousands of feet of extrusion. The extruded material is also known as extrusion as the name of the process.

What are the materials used in the Aluminum Extrusion?

Aluminum occurs naturally in abundance on Earth along with Bauxite. It is then merged and alloyed with other elements and poured into billets. Its constitution alters depending on the type and quantity of additives added to the aluminum. The chief raw material used for aluminum extrusion is the cast aluminum.

Process of Aluminum Extrusion

The process of aluminum extrusion begins with heating logs up to 400-480oC (750-900oF). It remains in its solid-state but becomes malleable. Heating does not produce a glow in it either it is hot or cold.

Press container receives hot aluminum billet. A hydraulic ram exerts pressure on the billet to push it into the box. The container’s stress increases to flow the aluminum alloy through the small holes in the aluminum extrusion cavity.

The consequence is a regular shaped aluminum length. The emergence of aluminum extrusion occurs from the other side of the die.

The puller assists extrusion to extend along with the run-out table. The weight/ft of the profile and the numeral value of cavities in the die affect its length. With the appearance of aluminum extrusion from the die, the temperature ranges from 510-550oC.

Fans, water sprays, or a full water quench help the aluminum extrusion to cool. It is allowed to cool at a specialized rate for qualifying aluminum alloy features. The whole process involves several measurements of the temperature to meet goals.

Aluminum extrusion lengths are transferred mechanically to the cool table for cooling at room temperature. A mechanical process in which aluminum extrusions are elongated to straighten their parts is known as stretching.

Stretched parts are reduced to lengths ranging from 6 ft to 30 ft based on order requirements.

The last stage is to synthetically stiffen the aluminum extrusion to make them hardened according to the requirement. Aluminum gets rigidity naturally. Artificial hardening reduces the time for the procedure.

Hardened material is prepared to sell out to the buyers. Besides this, it can proceed further for additional processing such as assembly or completion.

Applications of Aluminum Extrusion

Aluminum extrusion has a wide range of applications in our daily lives. Some applications are as follows.

Architecture and Construction

  • It has used for suspended ceilings.
  • It does have uses in the walls.
  • It has applications to make sheds of the buildings.
  • It does have help to make aluminum doors.
  • It has applications in making windows.

Besides these, it has applications in a lot of construction works.

Display Equipment

It does have uses to make display types of equipment. The reason is that its sections can be interlocked and assembled easily.

  • They are attractive and sustainable.
  • It has applications to make picture frames.
  • It has applications for making display cabinets.

Electrical Systems

Aluminum extrusion has vast applications in the electrical fields.

  • It is a good conductor of electricity. Therefore, it has uses in electrical components.
  • It has uses in LED modern lighting.
  • It does have uses to make a radiator or heat exchanger.
  • It is used in solar panel support structures to provide them strength.
  • It does have uses for roof-mounted panels.

Industrial Machinery

On an industrial scale, aluminum has a vital role in running mills.

  • It does have uses to make workbenches.
  • It does have uses in inspection tables.
  • It does have uses to manufacture carts.
  • It is extendible. If a machine needs modification, it can be done quickly through this process.

It has applications for making frames of machines can be fixed with Lexan panels for a scene while saving the people working nearby.
