Choose the Right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Safety Tips for Working At Height

Your PPE is the most important safety equipment you have when working at height. It includes items like your harness, lanyard, and helmet. Make sure you choose PPE that is comfortable and fit for your purpose. Inspect it regularly to ensure it is in good condition and doesn’t have any damaged or missing parts.

Additionally, be aware of the different types of PPE and when to use them. For example, you would use a full-body harness when working from a confined space. In the same breath, you would use a work positioning belt when you need to be in a particular position for an extended period, like when painting or cleaning a window.

Use the Right Tools

The tools you use will also affect your safety while working at height. Make sure you know how to use them properly and that they are fit for the job. For example, using a ladder to access an upper window is much safer than standing on a chair.

Inspect your tools before each use and never use them if they are damaged or broken. If you’re not sure how to use something, ask for help from a supervisor or colleague.

Use Handrailings

Handrailings are any rail attached to a wall or other surface and run vertically or horizontally. They are there to provide support in case you lose your balance. When working at height, always use handrailings where they are available. If there are no handrailings, be extra careful as you move around.

Choose an Anchor Point

An anchor point is a secure point to which you can attach your safety line. It could be a scaffold, I-beam, or any other solid structure. Never attempt to create your anchor point, as it likely won’t hold.

An anchor point should be built by a professional and should hold more than 5,000 pounds (2,267 kg). It should also be able to support multiple workers at the same time.

Understand Fall Distance

Fall distance is the vertical distance you could fall if you lost your grip or footing. It includes the height of the platform or surface you’re working on, plus the length of your lanyard.

When choosing a safety line, make sure the fall distance is less than two meters. This will help prevent serious injuries if you do fall.

Use Aerial Lifts Appropriately

Aerial lifts are a great way to work at height safely, but they need to be used correctly. First, always read the manufacturer’s instructions before using any lift.

Next, ensure the area around the lift is clear of debris and obstacles. The last thing you want is something hitting you while you’re in the air.

Also, make sure the lift is on level ground before you start using it. And never overload the basket – it’s not worth risking your safety.

Utilize Ladders Properly

Ladders are one of the most common ways to work at height, but they can also be one of the most dangerous. That’s why it’s important to use them properly.

First, always face the ladder when you’re climbing up or down. Second, don’t stand on the very top rung – you could lose your balance and fall.

Third, never try to move a ladder while someone is on it. And fourth, always inspect the ladder before using it to make sure it’s in good condition.

Conduct Training

If you have a team of workers, it’s important to conduct regular training sessions on working safely at height. Review the safety procedures and make sure everyone is aware of the risks.

It’s also a good idea to mock up some situations, so your team can practice what they would do in an emergency.

The training sessions should include both classroom time and practical exercises. Hold them as often as needed to ensure everyone is up-to-date on the latest safety procedures. Also, make sure new employees receive the training as soon as they start.

Know Your Limitations

Working at height can be dangerous, even if you take all the necessary safety precautions. That’s why it’s important to know your limitations and only attempt tasks you’re comfortable with.

If you don’t feel confident working at height, don’t do it. It’s not worth risking your safety.

These are just a few safety tips you should keep in mind when working at height. By following these tips, you can help prevent accidents and injuries. Remember, safety should always be your top priority.
