Patents are more to protect inventions and physical creations and the subject of the patent has to have a unique aspect or idea that is specific to it.
Research & Regularly Check That Your Intellectual Property Is Not Being Stolen

The sooner you actually get your product to market then the less time there is for someone else to copy it and get in before you! Any employees working on your new product should be made to sign a non-disclosure agreement so that they are legally bound to not be telling anyone else about the product they are working on. This should include talking to anyone at all so that there is not even an accidental breach of security on the product.
