Baby, Personal and Pet Name Generators

Michael Austin Updated:August 23, 2026

These tools work differently from the rest of the cluster. Everywhere else the engine coins a word from a sound inventory; here it draws from lists of names that are already in use, or works out a name from one you type — a nickname from a first name, a middle name that fits a first name and a surname by rhythm, a sibling name in the same register as the ones already chosen. No meaning, origin or popularity ranking is shown anywhere, because those need a source that is both reliable and legally reusable, and inventing one would be worse than leaving it out. Every name you type stays in your browser: nothing is sent anywhere, saved, or put in a shareable link. That last point is load-bearing rather than boilerplate, because the sibling matcher takes the names of children who have already been named, and the middle-name tool takes a family surname. Four tools that would normally sit in a group like this are deliberately absent: generators for Indian, Hindu and Sanskrit baby names, and a lookup of names by meaning. All four need a source of origins and meanings that is both reliable and legally reusable, and none is bundled here. Those three categories are also not interchangeable — a region, a religion and a language of origin are three different things — and a tool that quietly collapsed them into one would tell families their name belongs to a tradition it does not. They will be built when there is data good enough to build them on, and not before.

      • Baby Name GeneratorDraw baby names from lists of names already in use, filtered by first letter, syllable count and length.
      • Baby Boy Name GeneratorDraw boys' names from a list of names already in use, filtered by starting letter, syllables and length.
      • Baby Girl Name GeneratorDraw girls' names from a list of names already in use, filtered by starting letter, syllables and length.
      • Gender-Neutral Baby Name GeneratorDraw names used for a child of any gender — Avery, Rowan, Quinn, Sasha — filtered by letter, syllables and length.
      • Middle Name GeneratorSuggest middle names that fit a first name and a surname by rhythm: a middle name that contrasts in length with the first name reads better than one that matches it, and one that starts on the sound the first name ends on runs the two together when said aloud.
      • Sibling Name MatcherFind names that sit alongside the ones already chosen.
      • Nickname GeneratorShorten a name the way English actually shortens names: a clip at a syllable boundary, and that clip with -ie or -y on the end, doubling the final consonant where English would.
      • Couple Nickname GeneratorMake one name out of two, by the constructions that actually produce something sayable: a seam where the two names share letters, or the opening of one against the ending of the other.
      • Pet Name GeneratorDraw pet names from lists kept separate by animal, because the registers really are different: a horse gets a name with some ceremony to it, a cat gets something wry, and a dog gets something you can shout across a field without feeling ridiculous.
      • Dog Name GeneratorDraw dog names from a list built around one constraint the other pet lists do not share: you have to be able to shout it across a park.
      • Cat Name GeneratorDraw cat names from a list in the register cats actually get named in — food, weather, small wry observations.
      • Horse Name GeneratorDraw horse names in the register the animal has always attracted: weather, light, standing and ceremony.
      • Sanskrit Baby Name GeneratorDraw baby names whose Sanskrit form is not seriously disputed, each shown with that Sanskrit form and with Monier-Williams' own wording for what the word means.

      Frequently asked questions

Why do these tools work differently from the rest of the site's name generators?

Because the job is different. Everywhere else the engine coins a word from a sound inventory, which is right for a band, a spaceship or a startup. A parent wants a name that already exists, and so does somebody naming a dog, so these tools draw from fixed lists of names in ordinary use, or work out a name from one you type.

Why is there no meaning shown next to any name?

Because there is no verified source for one here. Name meanings are contested far more often than the confident one-line glosses elsewhere suggest, and those glosses get copied from site to site until they look unanimous. An invented meaning is a claim about somebody's language and family history, offered to a person about to write it on a birth certificate, so these tools show nothing and say so.

Why are there no tools for names by language, religion or origin?

Because doing it honestly needs verified origin data, and doing it badly means telling a family their name belongs to a tradition it does not. Categories like these are not interchangeable – a region, a religion and a language of origin are three different things – and a tool that collapses them causes real offence. They will be built when there is a source good enough to build them on.

Do any of these show how popular a name is?

No, and none of them estimates. National statistics agencies publish name figures for free and they are far more reliable than anything a generator could infer. Nothing in this group is checked against any ranking or register.

What is the score on each result card?

Readability, and nothing else: how easily the name is said aloud and written down after being heard. It is not a judgement of the name. On the pet pages it is genuinely practical, because the name gets typed onto a microchip record and a vaccination card by somebody who heard it once.

Which of these tools need me to type a name in?

Four of them. The nickname and couple tools work from names you type; the middle-name and sibling tools use one to weight their suggestions. The baby and pet tools need nothing typed at all – they draw from their lists and you filter.

Are the names I type kept private?

Yes, and this is the group where it matters most. Everything runs in your browser: family names and children's names are never transmitted, never logged, never stored anywhere except your own browser, and never placed in a shareable link.
