Why four dice and drop one
Rolling 3d6 for an ability score is the original method and produces an average of 10.5, with the extremes genuinely rare. It generates ordinary people. That was the intent in early editions, where a character with a poor score was simply a character with a poor score.
Rolling four and discarding the lowest shifts the distribution upward β the average rises to about 12.24 β and makes high scores meaningfully more common without making them guaranteed. It generates capable people while leaving room for a weak spot. That balance is why the method spread and stuck.
The mechanism is simple: discarding the lowest die removes the worst outcome from each roll, so low totals become much less likely while the ceiling stays at 18.
Reading the numbers
The score itself is only half the information. What matters in play is the modifier, derived by subtracting 10 and halving, rounding down. Scores pair up: 12 and 13 both give +1, 14 and 15 both give +2.
This has a practical consequence people often miss. Raising a score from 13 to 14 is worth a full point of modifier; raising it from 12 to 13 is worth nothing at all in most situations. Variance is the whole argument
Rolled scores vary, and that variance is the entire debate. One player rolls three scores above 15 and another rolls nothing above 13, and they sit at the same table for a year. Whether that is exciting or unfair is a question about your group, not about the dice.
Fixed arrays and point-buy systems exist because many tables decided the variance was not worth it. Nothing is lost mathematically β a standard array is close to the average of a rolled set β but the story of the roll is lost, and some players value that a great deal.
Where a table does roll, it is worth agreeing beforehand what happens with a very poor set. Rerolling the whole set if the total falls below a threshold is a common house rule, and having it decided in advance avoids an argument at exactly the wrong moment.
Rolling in the open
Showing all four dice and marking the discarded one is not decoration. Character creation is the moment where a roll matters most and is hardest to verify afterwards, and a score reported without its dice is a number you have to take on trust.
The same applies at the table: rolling in the open is a convention precisely because it makes the result checkable by everyone present. A digital roller that hides its working is a step backwards from a physical die.
Notation for everything else
Beyond character creation, most rolls are expressions: 1d20+5 for an attack, 8d6 for a fireball, 2d4+2 for healing. Notation mode handles those directly, including mixed expressions such as 2d6+1d8 where more than one die type contributes.
The notation is the standard one β a count, the letter d, the number of faces, then an optional modifier β so an expression copied straight out of a rulebook or a character sheet works without translation.
