Text Cleaner

Michael Austin Updated:August 24, 2026

Tidy pasted text without changing what it says: trailing spaces, repeated spaces, repeated blank lines, list numbering and bullet characters, each switched on or off separately. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use the Text Cleaner

  1. Paste the messy text into the input panel.
  2. Tick the things you want fixed: trailing spaces, repeated spaces, blank lines, list numbering or bullets.
  3. Click Clean text.
  4. Compare the before and after counts, then copy the cleaned text.

Frequently asked questions

What does the text cleaner change?

Only whitespace and list markers, and only the ones you tick. It never rewrites words, fixes spelling or changes punctuation, so the text still says exactly what it said — it is a formatting tool, not an editor.

What is the difference between collapsing and removing blank lines?

Collapsing reduces any run of blank lines to a single one, which keeps paragraph breaks intact. Removing takes them all out, which runs the paragraphs together. Collapse is the safe default for prose; remove suits lists and data.

Why does my pasted text have double spaces everywhere?

PDFs and some word processors use extra spaces for justification, and they survive copying. Collapsing repeated spaces fixes it in one pass. The same is true of the non-breaking spaces that web pages often use, which look identical but are a different character.

Can it strip numbering from a pasted list?

Yes. Removing list numbering takes off leading markers such as 1. or 2) and removing bullets takes off characters such as – and •. Both are off by default, because a line that legitimately starts with a number should not lose it by accident.

Does it tell me what it changed?

It reports the character, word and line counts before and after, so you can see the size of the change at a glance. A cleaning pass that removes far more than you expected is usually a sign that an option is doing something you did not intend.

Will it fix smart quotes and dashes?

No, and that is deliberate. Converting typographic quotes and em dashes to their plain equivalents changes what the text says typographically, and the right answer depends on where the text is going. This tool restricts itself to whitespace and markers.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Cleaning runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you paste is transmitted or stored. Reloading the page clears it.
