What is Ransomware?

Stop Ransomware In Its Tracks

Ransomware is a type of malware that affects the files on a computer system. It’s a type of malware that criminals use to encrypt those files so that the owner essentially no longer has access to their own computer.

When a ransomware attack occurs, the criminal demands a ransom that’s often very high in exchange for restoring access to the data and files.

Most victims of ransomware are companies. However, everyday individuals can also become targets of cybercriminals who rely on ransomware. When a criminal demands ransom in exchange for releasing the files, they often give a set period of time the victim has to comply, usually around 24 to 48 hours.

The Challenge of Finding Ransomware Criminals

It can be a true challenge to locate criminals who use ransomware. Often, they rely on cryptocurrency for ransom payments, which makes it difficult to track them down. They are also increasingly relying on open-source code and other means to skirt traditional security measures.

How to Defend Against Ransomware

Ransomware protection through reputable companies such as Zscaler is the only way to prevent becoming a victim of this type of cybercrime. However, if you do get hit with ransomware, you can mitigate the damage. Use these tips to defend against ransomware.

Make backups

Making regular backups of your data can help prevent you from having access to your most important files. You should go the extra mile and make both hardware and cloud backups. As a result, you’re doubly protected and can start fresh by wiping your computer clean and reinstalling your files.

Secure all backups

Always secure all your backups and make them inaccessible to potential cybercriminals.

Use anti-malware software

Use antivirus and anti-malware software, keep it regularly updated and run it regularly to detect any potential attacks on your system. The sooner something is detected, the sooner it can be eliminated from your computer.

Be smart while browsing

Use your common sense while browsing the Internet. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments in emails from senders you don’t know. You should also avoid even replying to strange texts or emails.

Use secure networks

Only use a secure Wi-Fi network. Public networks should be avoided as anyone can spy on your Internet use. However, if you must use public Wi-Fi, keep yourself protected by using a VPN while doing so.

Stay updated

Staying updated on all the latest trends surrounding ransomware and other malware can keep you protected from potential attacks. You’ll know what to look for and what to avoid as a result.

Devise a security awareness program

If you run a business, you can keep company files and data safe by devising a security awareness program. Having every member of your staff apprised of all the latest developments and knowing how to use security can keep you better protected. You may also want to perform regular drills and tests to see if everyone is up and up.

These tips can provide you with good ransomware protection. When you follow them, you’ll be in good shape.
