What Makes Belmar Beach Special?

Belmar Beach NJ is more than just a stretch of sand by the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a blend of classic Jersey Shore charm and modern amenities that cater to all kinds of visitors. The beach boasts a lively boardwalk, excellent surfing spots, family-friendly zones, delicious restaurants, and regular events that bring the community together. Whether you’re planning a day trip, a family vacation, or a romantic escape, Belmar offers something for everyone.

Best Time to Visit Belmar Beach

Timing your visit to Belmar Beach can make a huge difference in your experience. The peak season runs from late May through early September when the weather is warm, the water is inviting, and the full range of activities and amenities are available.

• Summer (June to August): This is the liveliest time, with warm temperatures perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Expect more crowds but also more events and full services like lifeguards and beach badge enforcement.

• Late Spring and Early Fall: These months are quieter, often with milder weather and fewer crowds. It’s ideal if you prefer a peaceful getaway but still want to enjoy pleasant days by the sea.

• Off-Season (Winter): The beach is mostly empty, but the crisp air and serene surroundings attract visitors seeking solitude and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

Keep in mind that some activities and beach services might be limited outside the main summer months.

Belmar Boardwalk Attractions and Things To Do

The Belmar boardwalk is the heart of the town’s beach scene. Stretching about 1.3 miles along Ocean Avenue, roughly from 1st to 20th Avenues, the boardwalk is lined with pavilions, eateries, restrooms and beach services that keep visitors busy all day.

• Classic Amusements: Belmar’s boardwalk is not a rides-and-games boardwalk; arcade games and mini-golf are found in town rather than on the boards, and the nearest amusement rides are a short drive south at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach.

• Shopping: Find local souvenirs, beach gear, and unique crafts.

• Dining: Numerous cafes and restaurants serve everything from quick snacks to seafood feasts.

• Events: Seasonal concerts, movie nights, and festivals make the boardwalk a lively social hub.

• Strolling & Biking: The boardwalk is perfect for a scenic walk, especially at sunrise or sunset. Under borough beach rules, bicycles are allowed on the boardwalk only from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. between May and September (and at any time from October through April), while skateboards and rollerblades are banned year-round.

Exploring the boardwalk is one of the best things to do in Belmar Beach for those wanting a blend of relaxation and entertainment.

The table below summarizes the practical facts most visitors need, as published by the Borough of Belmar and its Beach Department as of September 2026.

How Much Are Belmar Beach Badges?

Belmar beach badges cost $12 per day or $80 for the season in 2026, according to the Belmar Beach Department. The borough sells badges online, by text message and by QR code, and the badge booths on the boardwalk are cashless, so buying ahead is the fastest way onto the sand. Online sales can add a processing fee.

Prices are set by the borough each year and can change before the next season, so confirm them with the Belmar Beach Department before you travel. For comparison with other Jersey Shore towns, regional outlets such as Patch and The Philadelphia Inquirer publish badge price roundups each spring.

Where Can You Surf, Boogie Board and Fish in Belmar?

Belmar divides its beachfront by activity so that swimmers, surfers and anglers do not share the same water. The rules below come from the Belmar Beach Department’s frequently asked questions.

• Surfing: Surfboards are permitted at the 17th and 18th Avenue beaches. The nearby 16th Avenue break is one of the best-known surf spots in New Jersey, and Wikipedia describes Belmar as among the most popular surf spots on the East Coast.
• Boogie boarding: Boogie boards are permitted at 7th, 14th and 20th Avenues.
• Surf fishing: Fishing from the beach is allowed only near the Belmar Fishing Club pier and in non-bathing areas.
• Boat fishing: Party (head) boats and private charters sail from the Belmar Marina on the Shark River, many from spring to late fall, for striped bass, bluefish, fluke and sea bass. Some boats also run whale-watching and sunset cruises. If you are prone to motion sickness, read these tips to avoid getting seasick on a fishing boat before you book.

Fishing registration: According to the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, saltwater anglers 16 and older who fish from the shore, a pier or a private boat must sign up for the free New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry each year. Passengers on a licensed party or charter boat are covered by the boat’s registration.

• Bringing cash for badges: The badge booths are cashless; buy online or by text before arriving.
• Packing alcohol or glass: Both are banned on the beach and boardwalk and bags can be checked.
• Bringing a pop-up tent in summer: Tents and canopies need a permit from May through September; use a standard umbrella instead.
• Surfing or boogie boarding in the wrong spot: Surfboards belong at 17th and 18th Avenues and boogie boards at 7th, 14th and 20th Avenues.
