It’s a fact that generators are a lifesaver. Especially when you live in an area where there’s a continuous power outage, you need an electricity backup to carry your daily routine chores.

Luckily, it’s the 21st century that we are living in, and technology has given us several different things to make our lives easier and more convenient.

Tips On Using a Generator

Tips for Using a Generator

One of those things is a generator. You all probably already know what a generator is and what benefits it brings, but what you don’t know is that if it’s not handled properly, the same generator can be a killer too.

If you don’t know what you are doing with a generator, you should at least understand that carbon monoxide and electrocution hazards can be extremely dangerous, and they might as well cost you your life.

In other words, before you learn how to choose a home generator, it’s important that you know how to use it. Here are some tips that can be useful to you into this.

1] Never put a generator in or too close to your house

Almost all the generator manufacturers have the same thing to say about the generators that carbon monoxide poisoning can literally kill you, which is why it’s better that you don’t operate one inside your house or close to your house.

On the other hand, we do understand that it’s difficult to buy a long cord that’s long enough for you to get the electricity back up even when the generator isn’t placed in your house. Yes, we know it’s hard to go a long way to just fill the tank of the generator, but at least, this is the wiser thing to do instead of putting all of your houses at risk.

2] Store and pour safely

Overfilling gasoline can be extremely dangerous, which is the second most important thing that you have to avoid at any cost.

This is the reason why it’s always advised to first check the limit of the tank and then buy gasoline accordingly. It’s obvious that if you don’t buy a lot of it, you won’t overfill your generator, and this is what will keep you safe and secure.

3] Limit the cord length to avoid any appliance damage

It’s true that generators are loud and noisy, which is why people prefer parking them at a distance from their house in order to have a sound sleep at night.

Well, if you are the same and if you want to keep your generator as far from your home as possible, then opt for a longer cord, but it shouldn’t exceed the length of 100ft no matter what it is.

The total maximum distance between the appliance and the generator needs to be not more than 100ft. On longer runs, the voltage drops, and that can cause some serious complications, especially a premature appliance motor or some sort of a compressor burnout.

4] Running out of gas can cost you a lot

The most important tip for using your generator is that you should keep a check on the gas on and off. Make sure that your generator never runs out of gas, or else the electric load of your house will totally drain the magnetic field of the coils of the generator.

Yes, the generator will start once you fill it up with gas, but it won’t be able to produce power, which is the main issue.

Conclusion

With these four tips, it will be easy and safe for you to use your generator. Also, make sure that you are using the best quality fuel because the poor quality or cheap fuel can reduce the life of the generator, which is the last thing you’d want to see happening.

Overall, buying a generator is a good decision, and you should really invest your money in something this useful.
