Everyone races simultaneously to fit polyomino tiles into their own puzzle outline, and finishing early earns first pick of the gems. Because all players solve at once, there is no downtime at all. It is a speed-puzzle rather than a strategy game, and it is one of the best in that narrow category.

A word game on a 10×10 grid where letters can be stacked on top of existing letters to change a word, so the board grows upward as well as outward. Scoring rewards height, which means a short word built high can beat a long flat one. It is a genuinely different game from Scrabble rather than a variant of it.
Uno

Match the top card by colour or number, play action cards to disrupt, and call Uno when you are down to one. A barber in Ohio designed it after an argument with his son about the rules of Crazy Eights, and the family sold it door to door before Merle Robbins sold the rights in 1972. Nearly every household plays at least one rule that is not in the box – stacking draw twos is the most common.
