In Candy Land, 2 to 4 players race their movers along a rainbow path to the castle at the end. No reading or counting is needed. On your turn you draw a colour and move to the next space of that colour. A double colour moves you twice. A picture (a “Sweet Treat”) sends you straight to the matching picture space, forward or backward. The first player to reach the castle wins.
This guide follows Hasbro’s official rules for the newest Candy Land (the 2025 edition, which uses candy tokens from a pouch). It also covers the older card version, the team game in the new box, and the rules people ask about most.

- Players: 2 to 4, ages 3 and up
- In the 2025 box: gameboard, 4 Sweet Scout movers, 1 Gummy Twins mover, 50 candy tokens and the Pouch of Wonders
- Who goes first: the youngest player, then play passes to the left
- To win: be the first to reach Candy Castle
How to set up Candy Land
- The first time you play, an adult pops the candy tokens out of the card sheet and puts them all in the Pouch of Wonders.
- Each player picks a Sweet Scout mover and puts it on START. (The Gummy Twins mover is only for the team game.)
- Shake the pouch. The youngest player goes first.
How to play Candy Land
On your turn, reach into the pouch without peeking and draw one candy. Move as it shows, then put the token to the side of the board. Play passes to the left.
- Single candy (one colour): move forward to the next space of that colour.
- Double candies (two of a colour): move to the next space of that colour, then do it again.
- Sweet Treat (a picture): move to the space with the matching picture, even if it is behind you.

How do you win Candy Land?
Be the first player to reach Candy Castle at the end of the path. You don’t need an exact colour: Hasbro’s rules say any colour you draw lets you land on the castle once you are close enough.
Split paths and shortcuts
- Split path: take the path that has the colour you drew.
- Shortcut: if you land at the start of one, follow the arrows to the matching colour space at the other end. Lucky you!

Common questions during the game
- Someone is already on my space. Move on to the next space of that same colour.
- I drew a Sweet Treat that’s behind me. Younger players may choose not to go back: put the token back in the pouch and draw again.
- The pouch is empty. Put all the candy tokens back in, except the Sweet Treats. Each Sweet Treat can be used only once per game.
- I’m an older player and want more choice. You may draw two tokens, pick one to use and put the other back.
The team game: Sweety Bear and Soury Bear’s Silly Spat
The 2025 box has a second way to play, where everyone works together against the Gummy Twins.
- Put three Sweet Scouts and the Gummy Twins mover on START.
- On your turn, draw a candy and move any one of the three Sweet Scouts.
- Red candy: move only the Gummy Twins, forward to the next red space (a double red moves them twice).
- The team wins if all three Sweet Scouts reach the castle before the Gummy Twins do. Any colour except red lets a Sweet Scout land on the castle.

The older Candy Land with cards
Many families still have a Candy Land box with a deck of cards instead of a pouch. Hasbro’s guide for that edition (A4813) works the same way: pick a card and move to the closest square of that colour. It also has picture spaces and shortcuts, and Licorice squares: if you land on one, you may lose your next turn. The first mover to reach King Kandy’s Castle wins.
Rules can vary a little between editions, so check the sheet in your box if something looks different.
Tips for playing with young children
- Name the colours out loud. Hasbro suggests asking children to count spaces and name colours as they move.
- Make up stories. Each part of the board is a different sweet land; let children invent what happens there.
- Go easy on Sweet Treats. Use the “don’t move back” rule for the youngest players so nobody gets upset.

Frequently asked questions
What age is Candy Land for?
Hasbro marks Candy Land for ages 3 and up, for 2 to 4 players. Children don’t need to read or count to play.
Do you have to go back in Candy Land?
A Sweet Treat can send you backward. In the 2025 rules, younger players may skip that move, return the token and draw again.
Can two players be on the same space in Candy Land?
Not in the 2025 rules. If someone is already there, move on to the next space of that colour.
Do you need an exact colour to win Candy Land?
No. Any colour you draw lets you land on Candy Castle when it is the next stop.
What happens on a Licorice square?
In the older card edition, landing on a Licorice square can make you lose your next turn.
Who goes first in Candy Land?
The youngest player. Play then passes to the left.
