American crime film Natural Born Killers was released in 1994. In the New Mexico desert, Mickey Knox and his spouse Mallory make a stop at a cafe. When two rednecks show up, they start groping Mallory while she’s dancing next to a jukebox. Before severely hitting one of the males, she first supports it. After Mickey follows her, the pair kills every employee in the diner except for one, whose name they proudly give out before departing. As the pair sets up camp in the desert, Mallory remembers how she first met Mickey, the meat delivery guy who took care of her family’s needs. Following a brief courtship, the pair killed Mallory’s violent father and obliging mother before conducting an impromptu wedding on a bridge. A lady is later taken prisoner in Mickey and Mallory’s hotel room.
Mickey rapes the hostage after Mallory walks away, furious at Mickey’s desire for a threesome. After driving to a local petrol station, Mallory makes advances towards a mechanic. They start having sex on a car’s bonnet, but Mallory murders him when she has a flashback of her father raping her and the mechanic realizes she’s a wanted killer. The two carry on with their murderous rampage, eventually taking the lives of fifty-two people throughout Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. Detective Jack Scagnetti is after them. At the age of eight, he saw his mother shot and killed by Charles Whitman, which prompted him to develop an obsession with mass killers. Beneath his noble exterior, he has a violent psychopath background and a history of killing prostitutes. Wayne Gale, a self-serving tabloid journalist, follows the Knoxes’ murderous rampage and features them on his program American Maniacs, quickly turning them into cult heroes.
After using hallucinogenic mushrooms to become lost in the desert, Mickey and Mallory find themselves on a Navajo rancher named Warren Red Cloud’s ranch, where he gives them food and shelter. Warren smells evil in Mickey and Mallory while they sleep, and he chants over Mickey in an attempt to drive out the devil he sees in him. During the exorcism, Mickey, who has dreams about his violent parents, wakes up and kills Warren with a gunshot. The pair encounters a massive field of rattlesnakes as they run away, where they get severely bitten and have an unexplainable sense of remorse. When they arrive at a pharmacy to buy a snakebite antidote, the stock is exhausted. Before Mickey murders him, a chemist recognizes the pair and sounds an alarm. Soon later, the couple is approached by police, who beat them until a gunfight breaks out while a news team records the incident.
Mickey and Mallory are set to be sent to mental health facilities after a year in prison. During the Knoxes’ transfer, Scagnetti gives Warden Dwight McClusky the order to murder them and say they attempted to flee. Gale has managed to convince Mickey to participate in a live interview that will be shown following the Super Bowl. Mickey says in the interview that he is a “natural born killer,” which encourages other prisoners to instigate a riot. Mickey is left alone with Gale, the film crew, and a few guards when McClusky ends the interview. He manages to overcome one of the guards and kill the majority of the people in the room, taking Gale and a few others prisoner. A live television broadcast profiling the riot is presented by Gale and his team. Scagnetti tries to woo Mallory in her cell in the meanwhile. She replies by giving him a severe beating, to which another guard uses tear gas to restrain her. When Mickey and Gale get to Mallory’s cell, Mickey kills the guards and holds Scagnetti hostage until Mallory kills him.
