NATO Phonetic Alphabet Converter

Michael Austin Updated:August 24, 2026

Spell text out in the ICAO and NATO phonetic alphabet – Alfa, Bravo, Charlie – for reading codes aloud over phone or radio, and convert phonetic words back to text.

Letters that survive a bad line

The ICAO alphabet — Alfa, Bravo, Charlie — replaces each letter with a word chosen to stay distinct under distortion, across accents and through radio noise. B and D sound alike; Bravo and Delta do not.

Worked example

JW42 → Juliett Whiskey Four Two

Alfa and Juliett are spelled that way deliberately:
"Alpha" and "Juliet" are misread by non-English speakers.

Why those words

They were selected by testing, not taste. Candidate words were trialled over noisy channels with speakers of several languages, and the survivors are the ones that stayed distinguishable. That is also why the spellings look wrong to English eyes.

Where it is used

Aviation and maritime radio, the military, and everyday customer service reading a reference number aloud. Anywhere a mistaken letter costs more than the time it takes to say a whole word.

Limits

Covers the 26 letters and the digits. Regional variants exist and are not implemented. Conversion runs in your browser.

How to use the NATO Phonetic Alphabet Converter

  1. Enter the text you need to spell out, or paste phonetic words to convert back.
  2. Set the direction.
  3. Click "Convert".

Frequently asked questions

Why does the alphabet use these particular words?

They were chosen after extensive testing so that each remains distinguishable over a noisy radio link and across speakers of different native languages. Intelligibility under degraded conditions mattered far more than familiarity.

Why Alfa and Juliett rather than Alpha and Juliet?

The spellings are deliberate. "Alfa" avoids the risk that speakers of some languages would not pronounce "ph" as an f sound, and the double t in "Juliett" stops French speakers treating the final t as silent. The tool accepts the common variants when decoding.

Is this the same as the police alphabet?

No. Many police and military forces use their own lists – the older APCO alphabet uses Adam, Boy, Charles. The ICAO/NATO alphabet is the international aviation and maritime standard.
