Frequently asked questions
Are these conversions exact?
Wherever the units allow it, yes. Almost every weight unit is defined as an exact decimal multiple of the kilogram — the pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, the stone exactly 14 lb, the carat exactly 0.2 g — and the tools compute in exact decimal arithmetic, rounding only for display. The two exceptions, the slug and the atomic mass unit, are measured constants and their pages say so.
Which converter should I start with?
The Weight Converter handles any pair of everyday units in one tool. The dedicated pages — kilograms to pounds, grams to ounces and the rest — add the formula, worked examples and a common-value table for that specific direction, which is faster when you keep making the same conversion.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter; weight is the force gravity exerts on it. All of these tools convert mass — that is why none of them asks where you are. Your bathroom scale estimates mass by measuring force and assuming Earth gravity, which is fine everywhere you are likely to stand.
Why are there separate tools for troy ounces and carats?
Because they are different units that share names with everyday ones. A troy ounce (31.103 g) is about 10% heavier than a kitchen ounce (28.350 g); a carat is 0.2 g and measures gemstones, while the similar-sounding karat measures gold purity and is not a weight at all. Separate pages keep the confusable pairs impossible to mix up.
Do the tools work offline or upload my numbers?
Every conversion runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent to a server, and once a page has loaded, the arithmetic itself needs no connection. That is also why results appear instantly.
Which ton do you mean — US, UK or metric?
All three exist here as distinct units: the US short ton (2,000 lb), the imperial long ton (2,240 lb) and the metric tonne (1,000 kg). Each pairing has its own converter, and the multi-unit tools list them separately so the word "ton" can never silently change meaning mid-conversion.
Can I download or print a conversion table?
Yes. Every converter ships a common-value table with CSV download, the Weight Conversion Chart page collects printable reference tables, and the Table Generator builds a custom one — your range, your step, your units.
