What this converter does

The formula

Divide ounces by exactly 16. So 24 oz is 1.5 lb, 40 oz is 2.5 lb, and 16 oz is exactly 1 lb. The relationship is definitional, so the conversion is exact and only your chosen display precision does any rounding.

Summing a mixed manifest

Where a list mixes pounds and ounces, convert everything to ounces, add, and convert the total once. A list of 1 lb, 12 oz and 2 lb 4 oz becomes 16 plus 12 plus 36, which is 64 oz, which is exactly 4 lb. Adding decimal pounds gives the same answer with more chances to misplace a point, and it destroys the ability to check the arithmetic against the original two-part figures.
