What this tool does

It builds a conversion table between any two of eleven weight units, from a start value you choose, in a step you choose, for as many rows as you want. The result copies, downloads as CSV and prints, which covers reference cards, packaging schedules, teaching handouts and anything else a fixed chart does not fit.

Setting it up

Choose the two units and the direction, set the start value to your lowest figure, set the step to the interval you want between rows, and pick a row count. For a kitchen card covering 50 g to 500 g, start at 50 with a step of 50 and ten rows. For a postal reference in ounces, start at 1 with a step of 1 and twenty rows. The controls are deliberately plain because the useful variation is in the numbers rather than in the options.

How the values are computed

Each row is calculated independently from the exact defined constants and rounded once at your chosen display precision. That is worth stating because the obvious shortcut β€” computing the first row and repeatedly adding a rounded increment β€” accumulates error down the column, so the bottom of a long table drifts from the truth. Nothing here is built by increment; every row is a fresh exact conversion.

Which units are available

Micrograms, milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, grains, ounces, pounds, stones, carats and troy ounces. That set covers kitchen work, laboratory quantities, freight, ammunition and precious metals in one tool. The units deliberately span both systems, since the tables people most often want are cross-system ones β€” a metric-to-imperial reference is the common case rather than the exception.

Choosing a sensible step

The step should reflect the resolution of whatever will use the table. A kitchen card in 50-gram steps is useful; one in 1-gram steps is a hundred rows of noise. A postal reference steps by the ounce because that is where pricing changes. A laboratory reference might step by 0.1 g. Matching the step to the decision the table supports is what separates a useful reference from a wall of numbers.

When a table beats a converter

Whenever the same kind of conversion is performed repeatedly, or whenever the answer has to be available to someone without the tool. A baker converting the same six quantities every week is better served by a card than by returning to a converter; a classroom needs a handout rather than thirty devices. The converter answers one question exactly; the table answers a bounded set of them permanently.

Precision across a table

The display precision applies to every row, which keeps a printed sheet internally consistent. Choosing more precision than the underlying measurements justify makes a table look authoritative and adds nothing β€” for kitchen use two decimals already exceeds what scales resolve. The higher settings are there for reference tables intended to check other tools, which is a legitimate use and a different one.

Exact constants, exact decimal arithmetic, one rounding per value, and validation that refuses a negative start or a non-positive step with an explanation rather than producing a nonsensical table. Sharing and reuse

A generated table is a small artefact that outlives the session that produced it. Downloading the CSV and keeping it means the reference exists without the tool, can be printed by anyone, and can be adapted later by changing a column rather than regenerating from scratch. That is the practical argument for a generator over repeated single conversions: it produces something that can be handed to someone else.

Verifying a generated table

Because every conversion is a multiplication by a constant, the difference between consecutive rows must be identical all the way down. Checking two or three of those differences confirms the whole table, since a computational error would break the pattern at the point it occurred. That is a complete verification rather than a spot check, and it takes a few seconds β€” which is worth doing before printing something that will be relied on repeatedly.

Choosing the range honestly

A table covering more than its user needs is harder to read, not more useful. Bounding it to the actual working range keeps the sheet short enough to scan and makes the row spacing meaningful. Where a range is genuinely wide, two tables at different steps usually beat one long table at a compromise step β€” a fine table for the common values and a coarse one for the outliers reads far better than a hundred rows at a single interval.

What the tool will refuse

A negative start value or a step of zero or less, both of which would produce a table that is either meaningless or infinite. The refusal explains itself rather than silently substituting a default, which is the same principle applied to ambiguous numeric input everywhere in this cluster: where the intent cannot be determined, say so rather than guessing. Everything else β€” large ranges, fine steps, awkward unit pairings β€” is accepted, because those are legitimate choices even when unusual.
