Origin of UN Public Service Day
By passing resolution 57/277 on December 20, 2002, the General Assembly declared June 23 to be Public Service Day.
UN Public Service Day honors the importance and virtue of public service to society, emphasizes the role that it plays in development, commemorates the contributions of public employees, and inspires young people to work in the public sector.
The UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) program was established by the UN in 2003 to promote awareness of the Day and the importance of public service. It was reviewed in 2016 to ensure alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UNPSA recognizes the inventive accomplishments and efforts of public institutions that result in the promotion and reward of innovation and quality in public services.
Each year, UN DESA collaborates with a host nation to arrange the Forum, which serves as a venue for a Ministerial Roundtable, workshops on capacity-building, and the UN Public Service Awards ceremony. The Forum is a platform for world leaders, Ministers, and other decision-makers to discuss best practices, strategies, accelerated actions, and innovative approaches for effective service delivery and transforming institutions. It draws between 800 and 1,000 participants.
United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA)
On Public Service Day, the UNPSA recognizes and honors the creative and exceptional accomplishments of public bodies in order to promote and value public services. The UNPSA’s mission is to encourage public servants to prioritize sustainable development while being more effective and accommodating in public administration around the world.
About UNPSA
Here is all the information you require about the UNPSA in honor of United Nations Public Service Day.
- In commemoration of UN Public Service Day, the United Nations Economic and Social Council established the United Nations Public Service Awards in 2003.
- The award scheme was updated in 2016 to incorporate the 2030 Agenda.
- These awards are intended to commemorate persons who have significantly improved the respectability and visibility of public service.
- The UNPSA works to identify and honor public service innovation and excellence that enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of governments across the globe.
- Without public administration or service, it is difficult to achieve democracy or effective government.
Sustainable Development Goals and Public Institutions
To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), institutions must be efficient, responsible, and inclusive. SDG 16 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development both acknowledge this. The Agenda also acknowledged that governments, at the national, regional, and international levels, bear the main responsibility for carrying out the SDGs and guaranteeing monitoring and evaluation over the next 15 years. Creating the institutional framework for directing the implementation of the SDGs and assessing progress is frequently one of the first tasks nations take to implement the Agenda.
The improvement of people’s lives depends on public administration, the backbone of governmental operations. Public administration needs to be reinvented in order to move forward. Realizing a better future for everybody will be difficult without public administration modernization and transformation to adapt to today’s needs. Governments become incapable where competent administrations are absent, and sustainable development suffers as a result.
