The SR716SW is a 1.55-volt silver oxide watch battery, about 7.9 mm wide and 1.65 mm thick (0.31 x 0.065 in). Its most common equivalent is the 315. Renata’s cross-reference lists the same cell as Energizer 315, Varta V315, Rayovac 315, Seiko SB-AT and Citizen 280-56, and its IEC name is SR67.
This guide uses Renata’s and Energizer’s data sheets to list the names, explain the 314 (a close sibling), and show why a 319 or 321 won’t fit.

What is the equivalent of an SR716SW battery?
The 315. Renata’s cross-reference guide for its 315 lists these names for the same battery:
- SR716SW: Maxell, Panasonic, Murata and Toshiba
- 315: Renata, Energizer (Eveready) and Rayovac
- V315: Varta
- SB-AT: Seiko
- 280-56: Citizen
- HA: Timex
Any of these fits a watch that takes an SR716SW. If your old battery shows one of these codes, buy a cell marked 315 or SR716SW.

What does SR716SW mean?
- S: silver oxide chemistry
- R: round
- 716: a size code. The 7 is the whole millimetres of the 7.9 mm width, and 16 means 1.6 mm, close to the 1.65 mm height
- SW: a suffix many makers use for low-drain watch cells. Renata’s sheet lists SR716SW as its low-drain 315. Energizer’s 314 sheet uses the name SR716W for a cell also built for short bursts of higher current

Is 314 the same as 315?
They are the same size and voltage, but not quite the same cell. Energizer’s 314 sheet calls it IEC SR716W, 7.75-7.90 mm wide and 1.50-1.65 mm thick, designed for continuous low drain and for “high pulse drain on demand”. The 315 is the low-drain SR716SW. A 314 will fit a 315 watch. Energizer rates it at 17 mAh to 1.3 V, a different test from the 315’s 21 mAh to 1.2 V, so its life in a 315 watch is not verified. If the old cell says 314 or SR716W, replace it with the same type.
Can I use a 319 or 321 instead of a 315?
No. Both are narrower, and the 319 is also much thicker:
- 319 (SR527SW): 5.65-5.80 mm wide and 2.50-2.70 mm thick. It is about 2 mm narrower and 1 mm thicker than a 315, so it won’t sit in the holder.
- 321: 6.60-6.80 mm wide and 1.45-1.65 mm thick. It is the same thickness as a 315 but about 1.1 mm narrower, so it would sit loose and may not touch the contacts.
Sizes are from Energizer’s 319 and 321 data sheets; the SR527SW name for the 319 is from Renata’s cross-reference. For the popular 377 size, see our SR626SW and 377 guide.

Is there an AG or alkaline equivalent?
We could not find one. Renata’s cross-reference lists only silver oxide names for this size. The closest AG cell, the AG3 (LR41), is the same width but 3.30-3.60 mm thick, about twice as thick, so it won’t fit. Stick with a 315 or SR716SW.
How long does a 315 battery last?
In Energizer’s lab test on a constant 47,000-ohm load (about 0.033 mA) at 21°C (70°F), the 315 ran about 636 hours (about 26 days) before falling to 1.2 V. That figure is for comparing cells, not how long the battery lasts in a watch. Real life depends on the watch, and neither data sheet gives a figure for watch life. Renata says the cell loses less than 5% of its charge per year in storage at 20°C (68°F).
How to check you have the right battery
- Read the code printed on the old battery, or look it up in the watch manual.
- Check the size: a 315 is about 7.9 mm across and 1.65 mm thick.
- Before you take the old cell out, note which way its + side faced, and fit the new one the same way.
- If the old cell says 314 or SR716W, buy the same type.
Button battery safety
Small button batteries are dangerous if swallowed. Keep new and used cells away from children and pets, and get emergency medical help straight away if you think a child has swallowed one.

Frequently asked questions
Is SR716SW the same as 315?
Yes. Renata lists SR716SW as the Maxell, Panasonic, Murata and Toshiba name for its 315 battery.
What is the Seiko or Citizen code for SR716SW?
Seiko uses SB-AT and Citizen uses 280-56, according to Renata’s cross-reference.
Can I use 314 instead of 315?
It fits, because it is the same size and voltage. But it is a different cell (SR716W), built to also handle short bursts of higher current, and Energizer rates it at 17 mAh to 1.3 V, a different test from the 315’s. If you can, match the code on your old battery.
Can I use 319 instead of 315?
No. A 319 is about 2 mm narrower and 1 mm thicker, so it won’t fit.
What size is a 315 battery?
About 7.9 mm (0.31 in) across and 1.65 mm (0.065 in) thick.
What voltage is an SR716SW?
1.55 volts, the standard voltage for silver oxide watch batteries.
