What is a bard?
Long before fantasy games, bards were real poets in Celtic lands. The word goes back to an old Celtic word, bardos, often explained as “praise-maker”. It lives on as bardd in Welsh and bàrd in Scottish Gaelic. Bards composed poems praising their rulers and kept their people’s history alive in verse.
- Taliesin was a Welsh poet active towards the end of the sixth century, according to the National Library of Wales. His poems praise the ruler Urien Rheged and his son Owain. They survive in the Book of Taliesin, a manuscript from the first half of the 14th century.
- Aneirin, from the same period, is known for Y Gododdin, a famous early Welsh poem about a battle.
- Today, Wales still has the Gorsedd of the Bards, set up in 1792 by Iolo Morgannwg. Its members wear white, blue or green robes, and it is led by the Archdruid.

The bard in Dungeons & Dragons
In D&D, the bard is a class that uses music and words to cast spells. According to the official System Reference Document (SRD 5.2.1) from Wizards of the Coast, the bard’s main ability is Charisma, it uses a d8 for hit points, and it starts trained in three musical instruments. Its signature feature, Bardic Inspiration, gives allies a bonus die that starts as a d6 and grows to a d12 by level 15.
A Charisma-based class suits a name that is fun to say and easy to remember. If your bard joins the College of Lore, which collects secrets from old books and folk tales, a scholarly or old Welsh name can fit well. Need dice for your first game? Use our D&D dice roller.
