The human body is made up of all the living and nonliving components that make up the human organism’s overall structure, including every living cell, tissue, and organ.
List of Body Parts – Body Parts Name in English with Pictures & Description
Human anatomy is composed of five basic parts: the head, neck, torso, arms, and legs. In this article, we will see more about 20+ Body Part Names with Pictures in English.
Head
A head is a part of an organism that typically includes the ears, brain, forehead, cheeks, chin, eyes, nose, and mouth, all of which help with sensory functions such as sight, hearing, smell, and taste. Although some very simple animals lack a head, many bilaterally symmetric forms, regardless of size, do.
Waist
The waist is defined as the area of the abdomen between the rib cage and the hips. The waist is the narrowest part of the torso in people with slim bodies. The waistline is the horizontal line where the waist is the narrowest or the overall appearance of the waist.
Hair
The hair on your head is made up of a protein called keratin. Your hair follicles are located in your skin. The hair follicle is the part of the hair that is under the skin. The hair follicle is attached to a small muscle called the hair bulb.
The hair bulb is what gives your hair its color. The hair follicle also has a small sac called the sebaceous gland. The sebaceous gland produces a natural oil called sebum. Sebum keeps your hair healthy and shiny.
Ear
The ear is the organ of hearing and balance. The human ear consists of three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear includes the pinna and the ear canal. The middle ear consists of the eardrum and three tiny bones called the ossicles. The inner ear includes the cochlea and the vestibular system.
Neck
The neck is the part of the body that connects the head to the torso. It is made up of bones, muscles, and other tissues. The neck is a very important part of the body, as it supports the head and allows for movement.
Forehead
The forehead is a region of the head bounded by three features, two of which are from the skull and one from the scalp. The hairline, or the edge of the area where the hair on the scalp grows, marks the top of the forehead.
Mouth
The mouth is a body part located at the center of the face. It is the opening through which food and air enter the body. The mouth is also known as the oral cavity or the buccal cavity.
Eye
The cornea, pupil, lens, iris, retina, and sclera are the major components of the eye. These work together to capture an image and send it directly to the occipital lobe of the brain via the optic nerve. When we look at something, the light reflected by it enters our eyes and is refracted, or bent.
Nose
The nose is a component of the respiratory system. It allows air to enter your body before filtering debris and warming and moistening the air. Your nose senses smell and help shape your appearance.
Chin
The chin is the lowermost part of the human face. It is also known as a mental protuberance. The chin is formed by the lower jaw and the lower gum. The chin helps to support the lower teeth and provides shape to the lower face.
Shoulder
The shoulder is a ball–and–socket joint that connects the arm to the body. The shoulder allows the arm to move in a wide range of motions, including overhead, across the body, and behind the back.
Elbow
The elbow is the joint between the upper arm and the forearm. It is a hinge joint, which allows the arm to move up and down. The elbow is protected by a hard, bony structure called the elbow joint. The elbow joint is made up of the upper arm bone (humerus) and the two bones of the forearm (ulna and radius). The elbow joint is held together by strong ligaments and muscles.
Arm
The upper extremity, also known as the arm, is a functional unit of the upper body. It is divided into three sections: the upper arm, forearm, and hand. The arm has 30 bones and extends from the shoulder joint to the fingers. It is also made up of numerous nerves, blood vessels (arteries and veins), and muscles.
Chest
The chest is a large, muscular body part that contains the lungs and heart. It is located between the neck and abdomen. The chest is surrounded by the rib cage, which protects the organs inside.
Armpit
The armpit is formed by the arrangement of the chest wall, shoulder bones and muscles, and the upper arm. It is located beneath the shoulder joint and is one of the warmest areas of the body. The armpit is also known as the axilla.
Forearm
The forearm is a region of the upper extremity that extends from the wrist to the elbow joint. With the help of the elbow and radioulnar joints, the forearm assists the shoulder and arm in force application and precise placement of the hand in space.
Wrist
The carpal bones, or carpus, are eight small bones that make up your wrist. These irregularly shaped bones connect your hand to your forearm’s two long bones, the radius, and ulna. Carpal bones are small bones that come in square, oval, and triangular shapes. The wrist’s cluster of carpal bones makes it both strong and flexible.
Back
The back is the large posterior area of the human body, extending from the neck to the lower back. It includes the upper and lower back, which together form the spine, as well as the shoulder blades and the sides of the rib cage. The back is a complex structure made up of bones, joints, muscles, and other tissues.
Navel
The navel is a small, circular body part located on the abdomen. It is typically considered an erogenous zone and is often referred to as the “belly button.” The navel is surrounded by skin and is connected to the abdominal muscles and the stomach. The navel may also be pierced as a form of body modification.
Toes
The digits of the foot are represented by toes. The toe is a component of the human foot, with five toes on each foot. Except for the big toe, each toe has three phalanx bones: proximal, middle, and distal.
Ankle
The ankle, also known as the talocrural region or the jumping bone (informally), is the joint between the foot and the leg. The ankle is made up of three joints: the ankle joint proper, also known as the talocrural joint, the subtalar joint, and the inferior tibiofibular joint.
Abdomen
The abdomen (also known as the belly) is the area of the body between the thorax (chest) and the pelvis. The diaphragm is responsible for the upper surface of the abdomen. The abdomen ends and the pelvis begins at the level of the pelvic bones.
Hip
The hip region is located lateral and anterior to the gluteal region, inferior to the iliac crest, and above the greater trochanter of the femur, also known as the “thigh bone.” In adults, three of the pelvic bones have fused to form the hip bone, or acetabulum, which is part of the hip region.
Leg
The leg is measured from the top of the thigh to the sole. In medical terms, however, the leg refers to the lower extremity from the knee to the ankle. The tibia and fibula are two bones in the leg. Both are classified as long bones.
Knee
The knee connects the femur (thigh bone) to the shin bone (tibia). The other bones that make up the knee joint are the smaller bone that runs alongside the tibia (fibula) and the kneecap (patella). Tendons are the fibrous bands that connect the knee bones to the leg muscles that move the knee joint.
Foot
The foot is a lower limb of the body. It is used for walking and standing. The foot has five toes. The big toe is called the hallux. The other toes are called the second, third, fourth, and fifth toes. The foot has a heel, an ankle, and a sole.
Hand
The hand is a body part that is used for many purposes, such as picking up objects, holding tools, and gesturing. The hand is made up of the palm, the back of the hand, the fingers, and the thumb.
Thumb
The thumb is the first digit of the hand. It is the shortest and strongest of the four digits. The thumb is used for gripping and picking up objects. It is also used for pressing buttons and operating switches.
