Obscure and Exotic: Uncovering the Fascinating World of Fish That Start with O

Fish That Start with O

There are countless numbers of fish in the sea, many of which have intriguing names and even stranger traits. The oarfish and the olive flounder are two fish with names that are reasonably familiar among the 75+ prominent fish that begin with O.

Others have unique and even amusing names that you might not be familiar with.

In addition, although many of these fish share names, they are entirely distinct and inhabit different parts of the earth. Some of these fish may be possible for you to bring home if you construct a new aquarium, while others will only be visible in photographs or even when you go scuba diving.

Old Wife

The Australian fish known as the “old wife fish” has prominent dorsal fins and vertical stripes of gleaming silver and black.

Due to the discovery of this highly beautiful fish’s fossil, it has been determined that it has been in Australian seas for more than 50 million years. At the moment, they mostly swim along the continent’s numerous coastal reefs.

The intriguing origin of this fish’s name is actually rather strange. This fish is believed to create a noise when it is captured that almost perfectly resembles the word “old wife,” and it is said that this noise is made by the fish grinding its teeth.

Oscar

Though they are not the best choice for someone who is new to fish care, many aquarium hobbyists love keeping oscars at home.

Owners of Oscars are aware that these fish have a peculiar personality that makes them entertaining to watch swimming around in a tank.

The oscar fish is a carnivore that eats a variety of things, including small fish, insects, and some plants.

This specific fish occasionally exhibits some territorial behavior, but as long as you keep them in a sizeable aquarium, this shouldn’t be a problem. An Oscar fish can live up to 20 years if given proper care.

Oarfish

Oarfish are enormous fish that can grow to be up to 26 feet long. They resemble eels in appearance but are much larger. Unfortunately, oarfish only come up to shore when they are unwell, which is why they frequently make headlines when they do.

Other than that, these fish are quite enigmatic and, while they can survive in seas with various climates, they usually stay at much lower elevations.

Unbelievable as it may sound, it’s believed that those who have reported seeing numerous fabled or fantastical creatures swimming around may have truly seen an oarfish.

It’s not surprising that some people could assume that this fish has mythical roots given how long it is and how it seems when it swims.

The oarfish, often called the “king of herrings,” is a huge fish that resembles a serpent and may reach lengths of 36 feet. Its long, ribbon-like body has dark markings down its sides and is colored silver. All of the world’s oceans contain oarfish, but they are rarely observed since they prefer deep waters. It mostly eats plankton and tiny crustaceans. Despite its imposing size, people are not believed to be at risk from oarfish.

Oceanic Whitetip Shark

Due to widespread misconceptions about how dangerous they are, sharks are not usually acknowledged for how captivating they are.

Having said that, you don’t want to be in the ocean alone with one of them, also known as the shipwreck shark. Apart from that, it is a calm, largely stationary shark that prefers warm water.

Three of the five major oceans include the oceanic whitetip shark, which likes rather cool water. One is unlikely to ever come into contact with one of these sharks because they rarely, if ever, approach the beach.

The oceanic whitetip shark is a sizable predatory shark that can be found worldwide in deep waters. Its body is slender and streamlined, and it has a distinguishing white-tipped dorsal fin. The oceanic whitetip shark is notorious for its violent nature and has attacked humans countless times. It consumes several different types of prey, such as billfish, tuna, and smaller sharks. The oceanic whitetip shark, regrettably, is also a victim of overfishing and is currently regarded as a threatened species.

Ocean Sunfish

The ocean sunfish is a very huge and distinctive kind of fish that, as a fry, really resembles the sun. They develop into very bulbous fish with a fin on their head and plump cheeks as they grow.

The ocean sunfish, in contrast to the majority of fish, has a bony skeleton. This fish can reach weights of 5000–6000 pounds when fully grown.

If you’re lucky, you might occasionally see ocean sunfish lying on their sides at the surface of the water and soaking up some rays. Although jellyfish is their preferred delicacy, they are not known to be very discriminating eaters.

One of the biggest bony fish in the world, the ocean sunfish, or mola mola, can weigh more than 2,000 pounds in some individuals. It has a peculiar dorsal fin that resembles a large bump on its back, a flattened and round body, a tail that has been clipped off, and a shortened tail. Every ocean in the globe is home to the ocean sunfish, which predominantly eats jellyfish and other soft-bodied animals. The ocean sunfish is a friendly giant that presents no harm to people, despite its size.

Ocean Perch

The North Atlantic Ocean is home to the ocean perch, sometimes referred to as the rose fish. It has spiky fins and a striking reddish-pink color. The firm, white meat of ocean perch makes it a prized commercial fish. It is frequently collected with bottom trawls and feeds on smaller fish and crabs. Recreational fishermen also favor the fish because they like the way it fights when hooked.

Oilfish

Deep-sea fish called the oilfish, also called the escolar, may be found all over the world in tropical and subtropical waters. Its body is long and narrow, dark in color, and has a distinctly oily texture. A well-liked commercial fish that is prized for its high oil content and buttery texture is the oilfish. Due to the fish’s high wax ester content, it is also well known to cause stomach issues in people who eat it.

Old World Knifefish

Freshwater species found in rivers and lakes in Africa and Asia is called the old world knifefish, also referred to as the ghost fish. It features a sharp, pointed head and a long, lean body. The old world knifefish is an electric fish that communicates and navigates in the murky waters where it dwells using its electric organ. It largely feeds on invertebrates and small fish.

Opah

A big, vibrant fish found in the open ocean is called an opah, also called a moonfish. Its vivid red coloring and iridescent scales give it its characteristic appearance. It has a circular, disc-shaped body. The opah is a significant commercial fish that is prized for its tasty, firm meat. It consumes a wide range of prey, such as squid and other tiny fish. Due to its home in deep waters, the opah is still mostly unknown to many people despite its popularity.
