Don’t Ignore These 4 Red Flags When Choosing A Real Estate Agent

Buying or selling a home is a huge financial move that requires professionalism, understanding, and commitment, especially if you hope to get the best results from the deal.

It’s not just about wanting to buy or sell a property; it’s more about having the right agent to help you handle the process and apply their professional wisdom to maximizing your profits if you intend to sell your home or minimizing costs if you want to buy one.

When Choosing A Real Estate Agent

Your choice of realtor can significantly influence the outcome of your home buying or selling experience, and with so many real estate agents out there, it can be hard to know who’s the best agent to work with and who to avoid.

While the right agent to work with is subjective to your needs and specific requirements, these red flags should guide you on the kind of agents to avoid.

Doesn’t Know Much About the Neighborhood You’re Interested In

When searching for a real estate agent, your primary concern should be their knowledge and deep understanding of the neighborhood where you plan to buy or sell a home.

Some areas can raise or lower the cost of a home by over $100,000 simply by moving up or down a block. Imagine having a real estate agent who doesn’t know these neighborhood trends and market conditions.

You could literally buy a home more than what it costs or sell it lower than the market rate because of their inability to accurately assess property values or provide you with critical insights on the neighborhood in which you want to buy or sell a property.

You don’t want that, which is why you need to watch out for this red flag in the agents you’re interviewing. The ideal agent should be able to provide you with recent sales in the area, price trends, and any other unique factors affecting the local market in that neighborhood.

Working with a locally experienced real estate agent will not only make your decision-making processes more straightforward and guided, but they’ll also be able to link you quickly with buyers looking to buy your property or sellers who’ve pre-informed them about their intention to sell but have not listed the property yet, giving you an unrestricted advantage.

Has Little to No Experience or Track Record

The last person you should be looking to work with is a realtor with zero experience. While it’s a great and genuine act of kindness to help them gain some experience, you’re putting yourself and your real estate transaction at a significant risk.

And if the property you plan to buy or sell means a lot to you, then now’s not the time to take such avoidable risks. What you should be looking for is a realtor with experience who can boast of their real estate awards, achievements, and recognitions, as well as their expertise in helping you negotiate and close your deal.

While interviewing your options, your ideal real estate agent should be able to discuss some of their previous deals with you and share significant details and insights from their experience that can help you make the best decisions.

Is Unnecessarily Pushy and Aggressive

Temperament is a huge factor to consider when choosing your real estate agent. While his primary role is to offer you guidance and recommendations, a huge red flag is when he tries to disrespect your preferences and priorities by being pushy or unnecessarily aggressive when communicating with you.

The last thing you want is a realtor who is hell-bent on pressuring you into making decisions that are against your goals, budget, and instincts. You don’t need that kind of agent in your deal.

These sorts of realtors are pretty easy to detect when you’re interviewing them because they are always:

  • Impatient
  • Acting busy
  • Listening less and talking more.
  • Failing to ask relevant questions.
  • Not willing to provide free advice.
  • Reluctant to answer your questions.
  • Exuding an intimidating demeanor, etc.

If you find that the real estate agent you’re interviewing has these traits, then it’s best you work with someone else.

Your realtor is supposed to work for you, not the other way around. So, working with someone you can easily talk to and communicate your interests is always better.

Has Poor Communication Skills

Real estate is a serious business, and slight mistakes like a lack of proper communication between you and your real estate agent can cost you a lot if you’re not careful.

That’s why you have to ensure your realtor is the type who is responsive, attentive, and able to convey information clearly and concisely. This type of real estate agent will serve you greatly and help you catch the best deals early on.

If you discover that any of the options you’re interviewing are hard to reach, take days to respond to your messages, or frequently fail to provide feedback, you have to strike them off your list and work with someone more reliable.

The ideal realtor will constantly check on you and keep you posted on the latest trends in the market, even before you hire them as your agent.

Wrapping Up

These red flags are not to limit your hiring process but to help you filter through your options when interviewing multiple real estate agents. So, ensure you make the most of these details while searching for a realtor to help you bring about the best results.
