Before we dive into fat-burning exercises, it’s important to understand the mechanism of fat-burning itself. When we consume food, the body uses that energy for our daily activities, and the surplus is stored as fat in the body which can serve as energy reserves. In the year 2012, a team of researchers in Denmark conducted a study where they asked one group of overweight men to exercise for 30 minutes a day for 13 weeks, and another similar group to exercise for 60 minutes a day for the same number of weeks. They calculated the energy expenditure and fat loss for both groups.

The first group burned 300 calories in one session, while the second group burned 600 calories. Now, everyone would assume that the second group most probably lost more fat, but that was not the case. It was found that both groups lost a similar amount of fat, regardless of the duration of exercise.

So, how did that happen? The answer lies in their diet. Exercise significantly affects hunger and we may end up eating more if we exercise more to make up for the lost calories.

Therefore, terming any exercise on its own as โ€˜fat-burningโ€™ may be misleading. We need to consider so many other things like diet, metabolism and how exercising affects both.

Having now understood that burning fat is not a standalone process but involves many other systems, let’s look at which exercises have an effect on fat burning.

Cardiovascular Exercise

Cardiovascular exercises, such as running, cycling, swimming, or brisk walking, are excellent for burning calories and promoting fat loss. Engaging in cardio workouts elevates your heart rate, increasing the number of calories burned during the activity. But, as we said earlier, pair it with a low-calorie diet to see true fat-loss results.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

HIIT workout comprises short bursts of high-intensity exercises followed by recovery periods. This type of training elevates your heart rate and metabolism, leading to increased fat-burning even after the workout is over. HIIT workouts are shorter but more intense than traditional cardio exercises, making them excellent choices for busy individuals.

Strength Training

While strength training may not burn as many calories during the workout itself, it plays a vital role in long-term fat loss. Building muscle mass increases your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which leads to calorie burn even at rest. Additionally, strength training helps to shape and tone your body.

Thus, fat burning is a complex process influenced by various factors, including exercise, diet, metabolism and overall lifestyle. There is no one magic exercise that can burn away your fat.
