Every ordering method has a bias except this one
Somebody has to go first, and how you decide carries consequences. Alphabetical order is the default and it is quietly unfair — the same students present first every single time, across every subject, for years. Volunteering sorts by confidence rather than readiness. Choosing yourself is defensible right up to the moment a student decides the order was aimed at them.
A random draw removes the question. Nobody chose, the process is visible, and the resulting order carries no message about anyone.
Order effects are real
Going first means being assessed with no benchmark yet established, which cuts both ways: an early strong performance sets a high bar, and an early weak one is judged before the assessor has calibrated. Going last means more preparation time and an audience that has been sitting still for an hour.
These effects are well documented in assessment generally and they are difficult to correct for. Since they cannot be eliminated, the fair response is to make sure the same people do not carry the same position every time — which is precisely what randomising achieves over repeated occasions.
Announce it early
There is a temptation to keep the order secret so that everyone stays ready. In practice this mostly generates anxiety without improving anything: students who do not know when they are speaking spend the session worrying rather than listening to their peers.
Drawing the order in advance and displaying it lets people prepare properly, and it makes the running of the session smoother because everyone knows who follows whom. The impartiality of the draw is unaffected by announcing it — what matters is that it was drawn before anyone could influence it, not that it stayed hidden.
Adjusting without redrawing
Someone will need to move. A student is absent, a group is not ready, a room booking overruns. Swapping two positions by hand is the right response.
Regenerating the whole order to accommodate one change disrupts everyone who had prepared for their slot, and it reopens the question the draw was meant to close — a second draw after seeing the first invites the thought that the first one was rejected for a reason. One swap, made openly, avoids both problems.
Why every arrangement really is equally likely
The shuffle is Fisher–Yates, which is the standard correct algorithm: walk the list, swapping each position with a randomly chosen one at or before it. Every possible ordering comes out with identical probability.
The common incorrect version — swapping each item with any position in the whole list — looks equivalent and produces a measurably biased distribution. The difference is invisible in a single result and unmistakable across many, which is exactly the kind of flaw that survives casual testing.
Beyond the classroom
The same reasoning applies to conference talks, team stand-ups, interview panels and demonstration slots. Anywhere a sequence has to be decided and no ordering is objectively correct, drawing it removes both the bias and the argument.

Building the schedule around the order
An order is only half a running schedule. Once it is drawn, adding times turns it into something people can plan around — particularly for longer sessions where someone presenting late in the day needs to know whether to be in the room from the start.
Building in breaks matters more than it usually gets credit for. An audience listening to twelve consecutive presentations is not giving the last four the same attention as the first four, and that disadvantages people for reasons unrelated to their work.
Where assessment is involved, breaking a long session into blocks with pauses between them is one of the few practical ways to reduce the order effect that no draw can remove.

Frequently asked questions
Why randomise a presentation order?
Because the alternatives are all worse. Alphabetical order advantages the same people every time, volunteering favours the confident, and a teacher-chosen order invites the suspicion that it was not neutral. A draw is impartial and visibly so.
Is every order equally likely?
Yes. The list is shuffled with Fisher–Yates, which gives every possible arrangement the same probability. No position is favoured and no name is more likely to land first.
Does going first or last actually matter?
Often, yes. Early speakers set the standard others are compared against, and later ones have more time to prepare but face a tiring audience. Since the effect is real and hard to correct for, choosing the order impartially is the fairest available option.
Can I show the order in advance?
You can, and it is usually kinder. Knowing you are fourth lets you prepare; discovering it thirty seconds beforehand does not help anyone perform better. Drawing the order the day before is common practice.
What if somebody cannot go at their allotted time?
