How to Build A Fashion Design Portfolio?

The fashion design portfolio is useful for many reasons: it sells your services, helps you save your own progress, and is a source of inspiration. Start thinking about it as soon as you start studying courses in fashion industry. Further, we’ll tell you where to build a portfolio from scratch.

Where to get projects for a portfolio if you are a beginner?

Fashion Design Portfolio

A typical problem of many beginners is a lack of worthy projects. Where to get them?

  1. Collect all projects from the design school. Follow the curriculum, and you’ll have at least a few good samples when you get a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fashion.
  2. Work as a freelancer. There are many orders for creating patterns or illustrations on the sites for freelancers. They’re not always high-paying, but at least, you’ll fill your hand.
  3. Create clothes for friends. Someone probably needs a prom dress, a wedding suit, or even shirts for men. Join in its creation.
  4. Participate in non-commercial projects. Check whether charity organizations plan any photoshoots or events and need your help.

The only way to promote yourself is to be proactive, meet people, and offer your services.

Fashion designer portfolio step by step

The main task of the portfolio is to convince employees that you not only have talent but also know how to find and satisfy the client’s needs.

  1. Figure out the specialization you will be showing. What are you going to work at – men’s clothing, evening dresses, underwear? If you have diverse experience, make a clear structure of it.
  2. Choose a portfolio format. Will it be printed or digital? (Spoiler: you should better have both of them). In the first case, you are free to play with the form: it can be a binder, a book, or just loose papers. You can glue fabric samples or make sketches. A digital one is universal: it is easier to edit and share.
  3. Create a plan. Typically, the best projects are put at the beginning. Then go simply good works, and at the end should be something strong to create a wow effect again.
  4. Show the process of creating clothing from a sketch to technical flats and a finished model. Tell about problems you solved, fabrics you tested, etc.

Be sure to tell a little about your strongest points and remember the main rule in designing a portfolio: the only limit is your imagination.
