Choose Proton VPN if you want the bigger server network, a built-in ad blocker and a provider that lists its jurisdiction as Switzerland.

Surfshark’s 27 months include 3 extra months on top of a 2-year plan. Proton’s 24 months are a straight 2-year plan. Per month, both work out to $2.49.
Which costs less over about 3 years?
The first payment favours Proton VPN by $7.47, but Surfshark covers 3 more months. Adding one year at the renewal price gives a fairer picture:

Proton VPN Plus is the smallest total payment, but Surfshark Starter covers 3 more months, so it has the lowest average per month and the lowest renewal price. Proton VPN Plus sits in the middle. Surfshark One costs the most, but it adds antivirus and scam protection, which Proton’s deal page does not list for VPN Plus.
Proton VPN Black Friday deal
Proton’s Black Friday offer for VPN Plus is on its partner page, the one our link opens: “Billed at $59.76 for the first 24 months, then renews at $83.88 every 12 months.” That is $24 less than the $83.76 two-year price on Proton’s own pricing page (5 November). On 4 November the page said “All new users are eligible for the Proton VPN Black Friday deal on this page.”
- What you get: 10 devices, 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries, a built-in ad, tracker and malware blocker, and priority support with live chat.
- Privacy: Proton describes its VPN as open source with an openly published no-logs audit, and lists its jurisdiction as Switzerland.
- Bundle option: Proton Unlimited (Mail, VPN, Pass, Drive, Docs and Sheets, 500 GB storage) is $77.88 for the first year, then $119.88 a year.

Surfshark Black Friday deal
Surfshark’s pricing page shows Starter and One at $2.49 a month for 24 months plus 3 extra months, with One carrying a “Black Friday deal” badge: “you will be charged $67.23 for a 27-month subscription (plus tax).” One+ is $107.73 for 27 months and adds identity theft coverage and Incogni data removal.
- What you get: unlimited devices, 4,500+ servers in 100 countries and, on One, antivirus, scam protection and Alert.
- Free trial: the 27-month plans showed a 7-day free trial (“Today you will pay $0.00”). Surfshark says the trial is only available with a credit card or PayPal. During the trial you can use it on 3 devices only, and $67.23 is charged when the trial ends. Trial availability may vary by device or region.
- Privacy: Surfshark’s pricing page says it has an “Audited no-logs policy”.
- Antivirus devices: Surfshark’s unlimited connections do not apply to its antivirus service.

Refunds and renewals
- Proton VPN: a full refund within 30 days of the first purchase, once per user. Payments by cash or bank transfer are not refundable.
- Surfshark: a refund within 30 days of your first purchase, one refund per service. Recurring payments are not refundable. Gift-card or prepaid payments, Alternative ID add-ons and purchases through some resellers follow different rules.
- Renewals: both renew automatically at the standard price, every 12 months, unless you cancel.
Set a reminder a few weeks before the first term ends. Proton renews at $83.88 a year; Surfshark at $79 (Starter) or $99 (One).

- Many devices at home: Surfshark. Its unlimited devices beat Proton’s 10 (antivirus excluded; a fair-usage policy applies).
