Shopify Store Name Generator

Michael Austin Updated:August 24, 2026

Generate Shopify store names that work as a myshopify subdomain, a custom domain and a storefront heading at once. Short, single-word results are favoured because a store name has to survive a URL, and every suggestion links out so you can check the handle and domain yourself.

Two names, and the difference matters

A Shopify store has a store name and a myshopify handle, and they are not the same thing. The store name is what customers read — on the storefront, in emails, on receipts. The handle is the technical address the store was created under.

The practical consequence is that these two can drift apart, and often do. A store renamed after launch keeps its original handle unless deliberately changed, which is usually harmless but occasionally surfaces somewhere a customer can see.

Choose the name first and let the handle follow it, rather than picking whatever handle happened to be free and living with the name it implies.

Names that behave well as a handle

Because the handle is lowercase with no spaces, a name that reads cleanly as a single run of letters has an easier life. This is where two-word names get into difficulty: the join sometimes produces a word boundary nobody intended, and it is genuinely hard to see until you write it out.

The habit worth forming is to write every candidate in lowercase with no spaces before taking it seriously. It takes a second, and it catches the small number of names that read entirely differently once the space is gone.

Hyphens are a poor solution. People forget them, mistype them and almost never say them, and a hyphenated address gets confused with the unhyphenated one that may belong to somebody else.

Naming a store you intend to grow

Shopify stores frequently start with one product and end up with a range, or start in one country and add others. Both are much easier under a name that did not commit to the original shape.

This is the argument against putting the product category in the name, and also against putting a place in it unless the place is genuinely part of the proposition. A local name is an asset when the locality is the point and a limitation when it is not.

What a customer sees, and when

Store names appear in a specific sequence for a Shopify customer, and each step has its own demands. The storefront header, where it needs to look right as a wordmark. The checkout, where it needs to reassure. The order confirmation, where it is the sender name and gets truncated. The bank statement, where it may be shortened by the payment processor. And the parcel, where it is frequently the first physical thing the customer sees.

A name that is long, easily mistyped or hard to say creates a small friction at several of those points. None is fatal alone; together they are a tax.

Changing the name later

Renaming a store is possible and not especially painful, which is worth knowing because it lowers the stakes on this decision.

What does not travel is everything outside the platform: the domain you have printed, the handles you have built, the links other people have made, and the recognition among people who already bought from you. Those are the real costs of a rename, and they grow with every month the old name is in use.

The implication is not that the name must be perfect. It is that the cheapest moment to get it right is now.

How the quality score helps here

Each result is scored out of 100 on pronounceability, structure, likely spelling, length and syllable count, with the reasoning shown under “Why this score”.

Weight spelling most heavily. A store name is typed into a browser by people who heard it from somebody else more often than most business names are, and a name that has to be spelled out loses a proportion of those visits silently.

Naming what sits underneath the store

The store name is the first naming decision, not the only one. Collections, product lines and variants all need names, and those get read far more often by people who are actually buying.

Two habits help. Name collections after what a shopper is looking for rather than after how you organise stock — customers browse by occasion, size, material or problem, not by your supplier or your internal categories. And keep one word per concept: if a range is called Everyday, it is Everyday in the navigation, on the product page, in the email and on the packaging.

Product names deserve the same length discipline as the store name, because they are what appears in a search result, an order confirmation and a shipping notification, all of which truncate. A product called by a short distinctive word plus a plain descriptor survives all three; a product whose name is a sentence does not.

Check before you build on it

Nothing here checks whether a name, handle or domain is free, and no result should be read as suggesting one is. There is no connection to any registrar, register or platform.

Check the domain, the handle on every platform you intend to use, and any marketplace where a same-named seller could cause confusion. Then search your product category specifically, because a competitor with a similar name is a problem no amount of design will solve. The “Where to check” button on each card opens the places to start.

How to use the Shopify Store Name Generator

  1. Optionally enter a word your store should be built around.
  2. Favour names that read cleanly as one lowercase run of letters, since the handle has no spaces.
  3. Write every candidate out with the space removed before taking it seriously.
  4. Press Generate store names and run several rounds.
  5. Say each shortlisted name aloud as if telling a friend where you bought something.
  6. Check the domain, your handles and your product category before building on the name.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a store name and a myshopify handle?

The store name is what customers read — on the storefront, in emails, on receipts. The handle is the technical address the store was created under. They can drift apart, and often do: a store renamed after launch keeps its original handle unless that is deliberately changed. Choose the name first and let the handle follow it rather than the other way round.

Do two-word store names cause problems?

Sometimes, because the handle is lowercase with no spaces and the join can produce a word boundary nobody intended. It is genuinely hard to spot until you write it out, so the habit worth forming is writing every candidate in lowercase with no spaces before taking it seriously. It takes a second and catches the few names that read entirely differently once the space is gone.

Should I use a hyphen to separate the words?

It is a poor solution. People forget hyphens, mistype them and almost never say them aloud, and a hyphenated address is easily confused with the unhyphenated version that may belong to somebody else. A name that works as a single clean run of letters avoids the problem rather than managing it.

Can I change my store name later?

Yes, and it is not especially painful on the platform itself, which lowers the stakes on this decision. What does not travel is everything outside it — the domain you have printed, the handles you have built, the links other people made, and recognition among existing customers. Those costs grow with every month the old name is in use.

Should the name say what I sell?

Only if you are certain the catalogue will not broaden. Shopify stores frequently start with one product and end up with a range, or start in one country and add others, and both are much easier under a name that did not commit to the original shape. The same caution applies to putting a place in the name unless the locality is genuinely part of the proposition.

Does this tool check if the name or handle is available?

No. It has no connection to any registrar, register or platform, performs no lookups, and never claims a name is free. Check the domain, the handle on every platform you plan to use, and any marketplace where a same-named seller could cause confusion. Search your product category too — a similarly named competitor is a problem design cannot solve.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. Generation happens entirely in your browser and the page works offline once loaded. Nothing you type is transmitted, saved names stay in your own browser's storage, and your settings are deliberately not encoded into a shareable link.
