India is home to a vast number of two-wheeler riders, with millions of bikes and scooters riding on the Indian roads every day. However, the thrill of riding a two-wheeler comes with its share of risks and safety should always be the top priority.
One of the most important safety gear investments a two-wheeler rider can make is a high-quality helmet. In this article, let’s navigate through the process of picking the right two-wheeler helmet for a safe ride in India.
Understanding helmet safety standards in India
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) sets safety standards for two-wheeler helmets in India. Choose helmets that meet or exceed BIS standards, which include IS 4151:2015 for helmets with a hard outer shell.
Key features to consider while choosing a helmet
When choosing a two-wheeler helmet in India, there are several key features to consider. These include:
- Shell material: The shell is the outermost layer of the helmet. Choose a two-wheeler helmet made from high-quality materials like fiberglass, Kevlar or polycarbonate.
- Impact absorption: The helmet’s impact absorption system is designed to absorb and distribute the force of an impact. Select a helmet with advanced impact absorption systems like EPS (expanded polystyrene) or ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) certified helmets.
- Ventilation: A well-ventilated helmet can help keep you cool and comfortable on long rides. Choose a helmet with adjustable ventilation systems.
- Visibility: A helmet with good visibility can help you stay aware of your surroundings. Select a helmet with a wide field of vision and anti-fog coating.
- Comfort: A comfortable helmet is essential for long rides. Consider helmets with adjustable padding and a comfortable fit.
- Weight: Lighter helmets can be more comfortable on long rides. Select a helmet made from lightweight materials.
- Certifications: Choose a helmet that meet or exceed safety standards like BIS, DOT or Snell.
Helmet styles in India
There are several helmet styles in India to choose from, each with its own unique features and benefits. These include:
- Full-face helmets: Full-face helmets offer the most protection, covering the entire face and head.
- Open-face helmets: Open-face helmets offer less protection than full-face helmets but provide more visibility and comfort.
- Half-helmets: Half-helmets offer minimal protection but are popular among cruiser and touring riders.
- Modular helmets: Modular helmets offer a compromise between full-face and open-face helmets, with a flip-up chin bar.
How to choose the right helmet size?
Choosing the right helmet size is essential for comfort and safety. Here’s how to choose the right helmet size:
- Measure your head: Measure the circumference of your head using a flexible tape measure.
- Check the size chart: Check the size chart for the helmet you’re interested in to ensure it fits your head size.
- Try before you buy: Try on the helmet before you buy it to ensure a comfortable fit.
