Browsing: Tech
The hardest part of technology is knowing which of it actually deserves your time. Most of what gets announced will never matter to you, and a good deal of what does matter is not new. This section exists to do that filtering.
Across roughly 1,800 articles the coverage settles into four groups. Tool and software guides are the largest share: file managers, converters, download managers, and step-by-step walkthroughs for the platforms people genuinely use. Buying advice tends toward the unglamorous questions, such as which television suits the room you actually have rather than the showroom floor, or whether a particular air conditioner still earns its price this season. Privacy and security runs throughout, from network security fundamentals to reaching blocked sites without making things worse. A newer thread follows technology inside organisations: SaaS design, legacy system integration, and the gap between cloud freedom and cloud control.
The editorial preference is for articles you can finish and then act on. In practice that means naming the limitation alongside the feature, saying plainly when the popular option is not the sensible one, and leaving out the specification tables that have never helped anyone decide anything.
It suits the reader who has a specific job to do and a search engine open: someone comparing two tools, fixing something that broke, or deciding whether an upgrade is worth the money. It is not a news feed, and it does not try to be. Announcements are covered only when they change what you should do.
If you would rather use something than read about it, the free tools section has converters, calculators and generators that need no signup. For narrower ground, AI follows how automation is changing work, and Digital covers websites, marketing and the business of being online.
Some subjects carry more weight here than the category name suggests. Security and privacy is the largest single thread — not corporate infosec, but the everyday version: whether a password manager is worth it, what a breach notification actually means for you, how much of the risk reporting is proportionate. Mobile is the next largest, weighted toward Android, and consumer Windows sits behind it: the utilities, the settings nobody can find, the recurring errors. There is a substantial run on cloud and SaaS written from the buyer’s side rather than the vendor’s, a smaller cluster on VPNs and proxies covering what they do and do not hide, and a set of file and format converters for the jobs that arrive once a year and have to be finished today.
The archive has history in it, too. Guides going back a decade are still here, including some for platforms that no longer exist. They are kept because the technique often outlived the interface, and because deleting the record of what people were told at the time would be its own kind of dishonesty. Where a piece is plainly dated, it reads as dated.
A reasonable place to start, depending on why you came: choosing a television around the room rather than the spec sheet, how large the risk of cybercrime actually is for an ordinary household, or the network security piece above if you have just been told to secure something and given no instructions.
What you will not find much of here is coverage of unreleased hardware, funding rounds, or the industry talking to itself. Those are well served elsewhere.
