Note (September 2026): Twitter is now called X, and the savetweetvid site this article once suggested no longer offers a video downloader – as of September 2026 the domain shows unrelated gambling content, so do not use it.
To download a Twitter (X) video for free, copy the post’s link, paste it into a reputable online Twitter video downloader or the open-source tool yt-dlp, and save the MP4 file. X Premium subscribers can also use X’s built-in Download video option, but only on videos posted from 25 July 2023 onward whose creators allow downloads.
Key Takeaways
- Twitter was rebranded as X in July 2023, and the x.com domain replaced twitter.com in May 2024; the same download methods apply to both addresses.
- X’s own download button is a Premium feature: it works only on videos uploaded from 25 July 2023 onward where the creator left “Allow video to be downloaded” switched on.
- Free methods rely on third-party websites, browser extensions or yt-dlp, an open-source command-line downloader that lists Twitter among its supported sites.
- Downloader domains change hands: savetweetvid, once a popular downloader, now shows gambling content, so check a site before pasting links into it.
- X’s Terms of Service say creators keep the rights to their content, so ask permission before reposting someone else’s video.
You often come across several videos on social media platforms such as Twitter (now called X) that you enjoy, and the first thing you may want is a twitter video downloader. There can be a few reasons for it.
Twitter Video Downloader Online
When you have enjoyed a video, you also wish to share it with others. But the share options inside X mostly reach people who also use X.
Even if you share it with other platforms, the video individually is not shared. A link is shared with a small snippet of the video. A person willing to see the video, have to go through the link to see the video. Of course, not everyone will feel like doing that. They would prefer to see a video that can get played directly.
Also, you might like a video so much that you would like to save it in your gallery.
So, how can you download Twitter videos for free? The most common free way is an online downloader that saves the video to your device; X Premium subscribers also have a built-in download option for eligible videos, described below.
1] How do these tools work?
There can be different features of different tools, but there are some specific ones for the standard options. Of course, when you are looking forward to getting a downloader, you will prefer to get the best one. Here are some of the features that you can get when you have got a downloader for your twitter videos.
- With the use of these online tools, you can download not just the videos but also the GIFs from Twitter and can save them in your device.
- Apart from downloading and saving the video, such tools also help in converting a video file format to convenient formats such as MP3, MP4, GIFs, and others.
2] How to download Twitter videos for FREE?
Free online downloaders let you save a Twitter video to share it privately or keep it on your device. Note that savetweetvid, the site this article originally named, no longer offers a downloader: as of September 2026 its domain shows unrelated gambling content.

3] How do you choose a safe free Twitter video downloader?
The right online tool can download a Twitter video conveniently for free (savetweetvid, once a common choice, no longer works as a downloader). There are just a few of the important things that you need to notice while you are selecting the right online tool for your requirements.

Can You Download Videos From X (Twitter) Officially?
Yes, but only with a paid subscription. X Premium (the subscription formerly called Twitter Blue, renamed Premium on 5 August 2023) includes a built-in video download option. According to X’s Help Center, videos uploaded to X from 25 July 2023 are downloadable by Premium subscribers unless the creator switches off “Allow video to be downloaded” while composing the post. Videos posted before 25 July 2023 cannot be downloaded this way.
How to use the X Premium download option
- Open the post with the video in the X app or on x.com while signed in to a Premium account.
- Tap the video to show its controls (on some versions, open it full screen first).
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose Download video; the file is saved to your device.
If the option is missing, the video was probably posted before 25 July 2023, or its creator disabled downloads. X’s Help Center also states that accounts of users under 18 have the download setting turned off automatically, and that creators cannot change the setting after the post is published.
Twitter Video Download Methods Compared

|---|---|---|---|
| X Premium “Download video” | Paid subscription | Yes | Only videos from 25 July 2023 whose creator allows downloads |
| X Bookmarks | Free | No – saved inside X only | Needs an internet connection; disappears if the post is deleted |
| Online downloader website | Usually free | Yes (usually MP4) | Ads, pop-ups and sites that change owners or stop working |
| Browser extension | Usually free | Yes | Needs permission to read pages; check the privacy policy |
| yt-dlp (open source) | Free | Yes | Command-line tool; takes a few minutes to set up |
How to Download a Twitter Video With yt-dlp
yt-dlp is a free, open-source command-line audio and video downloader, a fork of the older youtube-dl project, and its supported-sites list includes Twitter posts, Twitter broadcasts and Twitter Spaces. It suits people who download often and want to avoid ad-heavy websites.
- Install yt-dlp from the project’s official GitHub page or a trusted package manager.
- Copy the link of the X post that contains the video.
- Open a terminal and run yt-dlp followed by a space and the post link.
- The video is saved in the current folder; add the -F option first if you want to list the available qualities.
Red Flags When Choosing a Twitter Video Downloader
Free downloader sites are paid for by advertising, and some domains are later sold or repurposed. The savetweetvid case shows the risk: the name still loads, but as of September 2026 it no longer offers the tool at all. Watch for these warning signs:
- The site asks for your X username and password. A public video can be downloaded from its link alone.
- A “download” button installs software, a browser extension or a notification permission instead of saving an MP4 file.
- The page redirects to casino, betting or prize pages.
- The downloaded file has an unexpected extension such as .exe or .apk instead of .mp4.
- The extension asks to read and change data on every website rather than only on x.com.
If a downloaded video will not play, it may be incomplete; see this guide on how to repair a corrupt MP4 video. For downloading from other platforms, read about a free online video downloader for other websites.
Is It Legal to Download Twitter Videos?
Downloading a video is different from owning it. X’s Terms of Service, as published in September 2026, state that users retain their rights to the content they post, including photos and videos, and grant X a licence to make it available. X also prohibits crawling or scraping the service without its prior written consent.
In practice, saving a public video for personal offline viewing is common, but reposting, editing or using someone else’s video commercially generally needs the creator’s permission. Rules differ by country, so check local copyright law for your situation. Rights holders can report infringing copies to X through its copyright reporting process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download Twitter videos without X Premium?
Yes. Without X Premium, you can paste the post’s link into a third-party online downloader, use a browser extension, or use the free open-source tool yt-dlp. X’s own Download video button is limited to Premium subscribers.
Why is there no download option on an X video?
The X Premium download option does not appear if the video was posted before 25 July 2023, if the creator switched off “Allow video to be downloaded”, or if you are not signed in to a Premium account.
Does the creator know when I download their video?
X does not state in its Help Center that creators are notified of individual downloads. Creators can only choose, when posting, whether Premium subscribers may download the video.
Does savetweetvid still work?
No. As of September 2026, the savetweetvid domain no longer offers a Twitter video downloader and shows unrelated gambling content instead.
Can I save a Twitter video to watch later without downloading it?
Yes. X’s Bookmarks feature saves a post inside your account so you can find the video again, but it does not create a file on your device and it stops working if the post is deleted.
