Electronics are the fastest-growing waste stream in the world, and the reason is not that people throw phones away carelessly — it is that most of them do not throw them away at all. Old devices sit in drawers for years, losing value and leaking nothing, until eventually they go in a bin. Recycling one properly takes about ten minutes and matters more than most household recycling, because of what is inside.
What is actually in the drawer
A phone contains gold, silver, copper, palladium and rare earth elements in concentrations higher than the ore they were mined from. It also contains lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants. That combination is the whole argument: e-waste is simultaneously the most valuable and the most hazardous thing in a domestic waste stream, and landfill wastes the first while releasing the second.
The hazardous side is why e-waste is regulated separately almost everywhere, and why kerbside collection usually will not take it.
Wipe it before it leaves your hands
This is the step people skip, and it is the one with personal consequences. A factory reset is the minimum, not the whole job.
Phones and tablets. Sign out of your accounts first — on Android remove the Google account, on iPhone turn off Find My and sign out of iCloud — then factory reset. Resetting without signing out can leave the device activation-locked, which makes it useless to a refurbisher and to you.
Laptops and desktops. Modern drives are encrypted, so a reset that also destroys the key is generally sufficient. If the machine holds anything genuinely sensitive and the drive is removable, take it out and keep it. A drive in your desk is more certain than any promise about what happens downstream.
Everything else. Printers, routers and smart TVs store more than people expect — saved Wi-Fi passwords, scanned documents, account logins. Each has a factory reset; use it.
Remove SIM and memory cards separately. They are not covered by a device reset and they are easy to forget.

Reuse deserves the emphasis it rarely gets. Most of a device’s environmental cost is incurred during manufacture, not during use, so extending a working machine’s life — a new battery, a fresh install, passing it to someone who needs it — saves more than recycling it ever will.
What good handling looks like
Responsible processing means dismantling, separating materials, and recovering metals under controlled conditions. Irresponsible processing means shipping containers of it somewhere with weaker rules, where components are burned in the open to get at the copper — which poisons the people doing it and the ground they stand on.
You cannot audit this yourself, but you can ask two questions of any recycler: are they certified under a recognised scheme, and can they say where material goes after they receive it. Vagueness on the second question is the answer to the first.
Batteries need separating
Lithium batteries are the reason recycling trucks and facilities catch fire. A swollen or damaged battery should never go in a general bin or a mixed recycling bin, and it should not be posted. Most collection points take batteries separately, and devices with sealed batteries should be handed over intact rather than prised apart at home.
