E-Recycling: Have you ever wondered what to do with your old computers, cell phones, televisions, and DVD players? In a world centered around technology, the amount of electronic waste, or e-waste is growing at an alarming rate. Technology is constantly improving, and the need for the latest device is ever apparent. The National Safety Council has projected that nearly 250 million computers will become obsolete in the next five years, and mobile phones are thrown out at a rate of 130 million per year. These numbers are staggering, and landfills around the world are being filled with these unused electronics. What can be done to solve this problem of excessive waste?

The easiest and most Eco-friendly solution to e-waste is finding ways to reuse old electronics. Before heading over to Groupon Coupons to find amazing deals on the latest electronics, find a good use for your old equipment. There are many non-profits that are looking for working equipment, and would be happy to accept your old devices.  Garage sales and online forums like Craig’s List can also be a great way to get rid of the electronics you no longer need. Though your junk can be someone else’s treasure, it’s sometimes hard to find a home for extremely outdated technology, and that’s when e-recycling comes into play.

There are quite a few e-recycling organizations that will responsibly manage your unwanted electronics.  Many towns offer e-recycling programs, and The National Center For Electronics Recycling provides a list of trusted e-recycling groups. Some retailers like Sears have also committed to being more environmentally responsibly by offering home pick-ups for proper disposal of electronics. Reputable recycling companies follow strict guidelines to properly dispose of the hazardous substances like mercury and lead, which are found in your old electronics. All items are stripped and separated into steel, plastic, aluminum, and copper, and are recycled and made into new items.

Worried about security? Most companies offer hard drive destruction to eliminate the risk of theft identity and data breaches. Hard-drive shredders are used to rip the drive to shreds in the same way a paper shredder would shred paper. These shredders can also be used on cell phones.

Keeping up with the latest technology is a must to stay relevant in the business world. Buy the electronics you need and love, but pledge to protect the environment through e-recycling.
