IPL Winners List: All 19 Seasons and Runners-Up (2008–2026)

Indian Premier League or IPL, as it is popularly referred to as, has been played every year since 2008, and almost always in India. It is a Twenty20 cricket league founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The league started with eight franchises and has since grown to ten, which is the number that has contested every season from 2022 onwards. The teams represent different Indian cities and states, and every squad mixes Indian players with overseas signings.

Quick answer: Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the reigning IPL champions. They beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 31 May 2026, and became only the third team to win two IPL finals in a row. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians still share the record for most IPL titles, with five each.

Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils (renamed as Delhi Capitals), Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrises Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Banglore are the IPL teams that have been taking on each other year after year.

IPL teams are mostly owned by prominent Indian celebrities and business tycoons.

Chennai Super Kings that was earlier owned by the Former ICC Chairman, N. Srinivasan and Mumbai Indians owned by Mukesh Ambani have by far been the most competitive IPL teams.

IPL 2008 Winner (Rajasthan Royals)

IPL was played for the first time in the year 2008. Different teams competed with each other during the tournament that gained instant popularity.

Rajasthan Royals co-owned by Manoj Badale and Lachlan Murdoch played against Chennai Super Kings. Rajasthan Royals won the match. Australian cricketer, Shane Watson who forms a part of the Rajasthan Royals team was awarded the Player of the Series award.

Rising Pune Supergiants owned by Sanjiv Goenka of the RPG Group entered the finals along with Mumbai Indians. This was the first time RPS entered the finals.

Mumbai Indians that had been here many times won the match. Ben Strokes from the RPS team was awarded the title of Player of the Series. Rising Pune Supergiants was formed in the year 2015 and dissolved in 2017.

IPL 2019 Winner (Mumbai Indians)

2019 saw the twelfth season of IPL. The final match was played between two of the strongest IPL teams, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Both the teams had won IPL thrice earlier.

It was interesting to see as to who would take the trophy this time. It was a close fight as Mumbai Indians won by 1 run. The team became fourth time winner of IPL. KKR’s Andre Russell won the Player of the Series title.

Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets in the Indian Premier League 2020 final at the Dubai International Stadium to clinch their record-extending fifth IPL title.

IPL 2021 Winner (Chennai Super Kings)

Chennai Super Kings became the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 Winner. The Final of IPL 2021 was played between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on 15th October 2021 and CSK won the match by 27 runs.

IPL 2022 Winner (Gujarat Titans)

The 2022 season expanded the league to ten teams, and one of the two new franchises won it at the first attempt. Gujarat Titans, captained by Hardik Pandya, finished top of the league table and then beat Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 29 May 2022.

No other side has won the IPL in its debut season. Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami gave the Titans control with the ball through the tournament, while Rajasthan opener Jos Buttler finished as the season’s leading run-scorer with 863 runs, including four centuries.

IPL 2023 Winner (Chennai Super Kings)

Rain forced the 2023 final onto its reserve day, and Chennai Super Kings needed the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method to get home against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Chasing a revised target, CSK won by five wickets when Ravindra Jadeja hit a six and then a four off the last two balls of the match.

It was Chennai’s fifth IPL title, drawing them level with Mumbai Indians at the top of the honours list, and a fifth for MS Dhoni as captain. Gujarat’s Shubman Gill was the season’s outstanding batter with 890 runs.

IPL 2024 Winner (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Kolkata Knight Riders ended a ten-year wait with one of the most one-sided finals the tournament has seen. Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for 113 at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 26 May 2024, and Kolkata knocked off the runs inside eleven overs to win by eight wickets.

It was a third title for the franchise, after 2012 and 2014, and a first for captain Shreyas Iyer. Sunil Narine, who opened the batting all season as well as bowling his full quota, was named Player of the Series.

IPL 2025 Winner (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the IPL for the first time in 2025, eighteen seasons after the competition began. Batting first at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 3 June 2025, RCB posted 190 for 9 and then held Punjab Kings to 184 for 7 to take a very tight final by six runs.

Both finalists had waited a long while for the moment. Punjab had not reached a final since 2014, and Bengaluru had lost the deciders of 2009, 2011 and 2016. Krunal Pandya was named Player of the Match for a spell that squeezed Punjab through the middle overs, and Rajat Patidar became the first RCB captain to lift the trophy.

IPL 2026 Winner (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru returned to Ahmedabad a year later and defended the title. Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, were restricted to 155 for 8 in the 2026 final on 31 May 2026, and Bengaluru chased the target down with two overs to spare, finishing on 161 for 5.

Virat Kohli made 75 not out from 42 balls and was named Player of the Match. The result left RCB as only the third team to win two IPL finals in succession, after Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011 and Mumbai Indians in 2019 and 2020, and took the franchise to two titles overall.
