Jamaica
Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Spanning 10,990 square kilometers in area, it is the third–largest island of the Greater Antilles and the fourth–largest island country in the Caribbean. Jamaica lies about 145 kilometers south of Cuba, and 191 kilometers west of Hispaniola. The island‘s indigenous Arawak and Taíno inhabitants, originating in South America, named the island Xaymaca, meaning “land of wood and water“.
When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1494, he renamed the island Santiago. The Spanish enslaved the native population and forcibly transplanted African slaves to the island, which became a colony of the Kingdom of Spain. Under Spanish rule, the island adopted the name Jamaica. When the British captured the island in 1655, they renamed it Jamaica. Under British colonial rule, Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with its plantation economy highly dependent on slaves forcibly transported from Africa.
The British fully emancipated all slaves in 1838, and many freedmen chose to have subsistence farms rather than work on plantations. Beginning in the 1840s, the British utilized Chinese and Indian indentured labor to work on plantations. The island achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962. With 2.9 million people, Jamaica is the third–most populous Anglophone country in the Americas (after the United States and Canada), and the fourth–most populous country in the Caribbean. Kingston is the country‘s capital and largest city, with a population of 937,700.

Japan is an island country in East Asia. It is bordered by the Sea of Japan to the west, and it extends from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. Its capital is Tokyo. The kanji that make up Japan‘s name means “sun origin“. At its origin, its territory only consisted of the four main islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku.
The Ryukyu Islands, which include Okinawa, are a chain of islands south of Kyushu. Japan‘s territory also includes more than 3,000 smaller islands. The largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about 97% of Japan‘s land area. Most of the islands are mountainous, and many are volcanic.
The highest mountain is Mount Fuji, with an elevation of 3,776 meters. Japan has a population of over 126 million people, making it the tenth most populous country in the world. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world, with over 38 million people.
East Asia’s Japan, also known as Nihon or Nippon, is made up of clusters of islands that are close to the eastern coasts of China, Russia, and Korea. Nihon or Nippon means “the origin of the Sun” in Japanese. East and west of the country, respectively, are the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. Japan’s capital and largest city are Tokyo. Japan is the 61st largest country in the world with a total area of 145,936 square miles.
